rod, you are doing a great fucking job on this, it kinda kills me to hear that you don't want to do this for money becuz i had the thought of asking you to paint a few top secret dwarfcraft guitars in the future, but perhaps a trade would be in the works?
either way, your a true gent, and king amongst theifs and drunks.

Have you ever thought to offer this as a service people could pay for?
Nah, the second you start accepting money for something you find enjoyable, it becomes work.
Plus, painting is such a fickle thing and to do what a 'customers' expectations are might not be exactly what the final product is. Before I started painting Pat's guitar I kind of set him up for the fact that the body won't be a dead on match to the headstock and I'm limited by the colors reranch provide. Even with that in mind, what I find acceptable for an over all look isn't what everyone is looking for. This guitar has a sand through on the upper horn, Pat is cool enough to not care, but if I were charging someone chances are I would be starting all over and respraying it at my cost. That alone would make the turn around time twice as long. I've seen how well long turn around times bode with board members here and I don't want the headache.
With all that said, I've got no problem opening myself up to some of Shortscale's members I've had positive interactions with, who want me to paint their guitar. The nice thing is it can be under the 'condition' that I'm doing a favor and any expectations would reflect that. There couldn't be any buyers remorse. The way I see it is Pat will get his body back and from the way his posts sound he is very happy with what he sees, but if not he's not out much. Well actually to date with paint, cans of air and random materials it's around $130, I guess that's no chump change. But the thing is there's nothing that can't be reversed from the time he sent it to me and we can both walk away knowing I tried to the best of my abilities. If he were paying for more than just materials I would be responsible for satisfaction and I've got way too many responsibilities in life as it is 8)

Now who wants a seafoam green and daphne blue competition?
I completely understand all that, it's the worst part of making pedals, is when things don't satisfy me and I have to start over or cancel builds - it's why I never take any money up front.

Still it's cool that you would be willing to do this for shortscalers possibly. I'm planning at some point to refin my CP Jaguar in Shell Pink maybe. I might have to pick your brain about hints and tips.

Pat - I couldn't believe what it cost to mail a 6 pound piece of wood and I didn't want to make a big deal out of it, but it was my mistake. It was very expensive, so I will take the hit on the charges.

Robert - Hmmmmm....remember that guitar body I wanted made? We can work something out, I'm sure.

Mike - Not a problem if you need help with it. I don't know if you remember, but I posted a thread when I refinished my Jag from sunburst to Fiesta Red. I'm sure it will be very similar to what you are looking to do. It's much easier to respray over the existing finish than starting with bare wood.

Is that a normal amount? Because that's exactly what it cost. Maybe it's me, but that seems to be an insane amount of money to mail a piece of wood.
I checked the tracking label last night and it left the US on the 18th, so it should be close. For some reason the tracking stops once it left the US.
I'll pm you the tracking number.

yep that's "normal" cuz it's EMS ("fast" mail with tracking number = more (illusion of) safety) oh well. normal stamp'd snail mail might have been half of that but arriving who knows when and how.
i PM'd back to you, and let you know as soon as i have it here. expect some heavy hardcore porn guys!!! :D

i'll be out on a school trip until thursday afternoon, and hopefully i'll have a box (and a loving wife, for a change ;)) waiting here for me. i'd first take care of the box'd guitar, of course, and THEN the wife. a man's gotta have his priorities straight, right?

;)

rock on!

got back today and found a box for me in my gear room. it's here! :D

i put it all together but still have to do the soldering. i'm oh so happy thanks man yer the king of kindness.
even got a free black beauties t-shirt!!! rod rulez.

my promise is still up, i'll play the stang on our next (?) gig on march 25th, and i'll be wearing my old blackhawks shirt. OR should it be the beauties?

the guitar looks and feels gorgeous. the body is a bit bluer (as in, more blue than the green headstock) and very glossy, but i'll work on that (glossy) later on. but MAN what a difference, the terrible de-fin body it had before. and now it IS a comp'stang!!!! yaaaay!

only prob is, i put in the bridge thimbles first, and now the bridge plate doesn't fit exactly on. i mean, it's like half a mm too "tight". and with the new finish coats over the wood, the thimbles are in VERY tight and i can't take them out anymore... ?! advices?

but i somehow put it together for now and i'll get 'er up and running this weekend. stay tuned.
and rod, you'll be getting some $$ in yer paypal soon.

but i'm off to bed. i'm a wreck. the trip to the mountain/volcano was über-cool. and so was the "dealing" with rob.
i'll think of a nice thank you gift too. advices and suggestions, please PM me.

ok gotta run, love y'all!

twice comp'stang'd Pat. :D

this happened on my 78 mustang after I wet sanded it down to the original finish. something happened and now it seems the thimbles are slightly off. at first I couldn't get it on right but then I figured out I just have to screw the plate on very slowly alternating between the screws closest to the thimbles until it pushes over them.

Leave it out in that Mexico sun for a bit, I'm sure it will green in no time.

I didn't think of that being a problem, but is exactly why I taped off the neck pocket.

I NEED to see pictures!
Pacafeliz wrote:and rod, you'll be getting some $$ in yer paypal soon.
Thanks, with shipping plus odds and ends, I guess I put about 90 bucks into it.

*edit* maybe closer to $80 $60
I started thinking about what the whole thing cost you and as far as I can tell it's roughly something like this:
$30 to mail it to me
$90 for paint and sandpaper from Reranch
$20 cans of air
$10 plastic masking sheeting, tape, tac cloth, and cheese cloth
$50 to mail it back
$200 total
Pretty hefty price in the end. For 200 bucks you could buy a whole guitar.
I also said I would eat the cost difference for shipping so take off 20 and call it 60.
Please, please don't send any more than what you feel comfortable with.

No worries, you're absolutely right though, it's way too shiney. Probably could have gone a bit deeper with the tint too, but time will take care of that.

ok so now i've been rubbing and scrubbing on the guitar for like 3 hours (no more glossyness), then did a little bit (not over-doing it) of aging/relic'ing, dings and scratches, the rest of my air spraycan, and she looks like a good faithful 30+ year old workhorse now! :D

only prob is,, i also wasn't careful enough on the spot where rod over-sanded a bit and so now the spot got a bit bigger. i'm gonna have to put a good ding in there to "hide" it, maybe.
but it's all character, too.

from now on, it's only gonna be stage-action to get 'er dinged up.
damn but i need to get 'er refretted ASAP, it's really hard to play the thing with such worn-out frets. but still playABLE.

pics soon, i promise!

Pat.
