WASSAT? *
....i know now that i just need to spend several days fucking with the amp. i'm gonna have a go with no pedals, and see what i can scrounge up.
Definitely spend more time messing with your amp. You ought not to be afraid of the EQ, it's a tool that helps you fit your sound into different scenarios, it's NOT some mystical set of knobs that is untouchable and will result on terrible things happening if something is changed or nudged a bit.
Also, being able to use your ears and the EQ is invaluable when you are playing with others. Being able to listen to the sounds that the other guitarist, the bassist, the keyboard player and the drummer are making, then realising where your space is and dialling it in is something you have to be able to do if you're going to play with bands. Being able to do this will help you get a good sound that fits and cuts through, as opposed to just cranking a bad sound that doesn't really fit in the first place. It's something that I'm pretty bad at, to be honest, but it's very, very useful. BacchusJim was always very good at this, and I suspect it's one of the reasons he was always in demand as a bassist, he could show up to anybody's gig and fit in well straight away without imposing his own tone on everyone else.

No worries dude.
As for my limited insight into this punk sound conundrum I'm with whoever said it's mostly attitude (Mage I think?). Take a band like Dead Kennedys where East Bay Ray who uses all sorts of scratchy trebly surf tones and a band like US Bombs where the guitars always have crunchy, even and overly-produced rock tones. Difficult. Having said that I now sound like a typical guy from TDPRI saying "tone is subjective, there's no right or wrong answer" like a dick. I would say the main constant in my favourite punk records is treble and gain but not too much saturation.
JUST REMEMBER TO BRING THE 'TUDE MAN, THE FUCKING 'TUDE!!

East Bay Ray is a bit out there on his own as far as Punk guitarists go, his style would'nt be out of place in a Surf, Psychobilly or Bar Rock band to be truthful. Brilliant guitarist.

He's easily one of my favourites. He's probably my only guitar hero other than Agata.

well, it's settled then. spent about an hour fucking about, and turns out i didn't need to fuck with my crunch channel at all. i just switched it over to the ULTRA! channel, and fucking shredded crazzy punkage. couldn't really get as ballsy as i was wanting with the LP, so i hooked up the dot studio (featuring dirty fangers in teh bridge) and holy shit... FUKCING PUNK RAWK!!!!1
only thing is the guitar does not look punk rock. i guess i'm going to restring the jagmaster and see what i can nail out.
thanks again dudes. for the pep talk and general guidance. this place gives me the boners in a gay way. like, i want to bang all of you. right now. BUT FIRST I MUST RAWK
