what happens with your drums, does james follow the programmed parts you do or does he do his own ones?

He generally follows the parts I write, making adjustments or additions on the way.

We've played music together for like 8 years now (including the very regimented Illuminati 3), so we're generally in agreement to how a drum part would go in relation to the riffz. Because there's only one other instrument, it's usually pretty obvious what's gonna happen. I often worry that I'm dictating too much, but he's always said "you write to my strengths, it's all good".

i suppose it helps that you can play the drums, when i program it's ridiculous.
