Using a 2x12" cab to run two amps at once

Post by Mike »

I was thinking about this in reference to the UKSSMUADH, in that We could run two heads into my 1936 cab at the same time, it's 8 ohms in mono mode but 16 ohms a side when you run in stereo mode, so each head could be connected to one of the speakers in the cab @ 16 ohms and all would be dandy.

So this made me realise you run a multiamp setup with a 2x12" and an A/B/A+B box much cheaper than getting a HeadBone or whatever to switch the signals at a speaker voltage level (and provide dummy load for the non selected amplifier). You just stack the amps on the cab (or side by side if they're little like the Crate PowerBlock or Orange Tiny Terror), they're always given a load and you just switch between the amps for Clean/Overdrive or both at once with a simple A/B box.

Cool eh?

What would I need to do to re-wire my cabinet. Mine is currently 2x12's 16 ohms and only has the one input (although the mounting whole for the second one is there) That would make bi-amping easy as fuck if I could just lop 2 heads on teh cabinset and a/b them.... I am thinking of selling by super reverb and getting a bassman head (or another TT...although that seems overkill....) I love bi-amping and being able to use the TT's natural overdrive....But 2 cabs is too much...

it's pretty simple, you use a switching jack. I'll dig you up some information.

http://colomar.com/Shavano/2x12wiring.html

See 2/3rds of the way down this page.

Only problem will be if your speakers are 8 ohms each and wired in series currently for the 16 ohms (which when I think about it is likely). Since the TT doesn't have a 4 ohm output it means that if you change the wiring to this configuration it will be 8 ohms a side in stereo and 4 ohms mono, meaning you can't use the TT to driver both speakers on it's own. If you repace the drivers with 16 ohm speakers then it will be 16 ohms a side and 8 ohms mono.

Cool... I might have to think about that.... With the powerblock, the TT, and the possibility of switching out the super for a bassman......It looks like a good idea..

Are you gonna give the JVM some time to compete and make your decision then or are you already set?

lets put it this way. . . i've logged a mere 60 minutes or less on the jvm. in that time i was able to dial up the tones i was using on the tsl and then some. . . er, then a thousand more. i mean, there are a few things that the tsl had that made it extremely verstatile itself (vpr, the deep switches, dual fx loops), but the jvm outstrips it handily.

the only question remaining is when/to whom the tsl will be sold. junkbox may want it (though i doubt that), so i'll know after this weekend if it's going up on ebay or not.

Nice. I'm well chuffed you got onboard and love it so much. It's an amazing amp.

My favourite sounds are probably real different to yours, I use

Clean channel green for bright clean tones
Crunch orange for a light Plexi crunch - gain at just below 3 o clock
OD1 Green for a throaty open JCM800 style overdrive, gain at 12 o clock, all EQ goosed to 6.
Crunch Red for completely dirty chunk drive for heavier parts and leads
Clean Orange for a Plexi light in between sound

and the Master as a volume boost.

these settings aren't in stone, but i'm looking at something like

clean on green
crunch on orange, gain @ 11 o'clock
od1 on orange, gain @ 10 o'clock
od2 on red, gain @ 12 o'clock for a lead
master as volume boost

weeeeeeeeeeeeee!

i had a chance to record using the emulated line-out, but then work got really busy. by the time that subsided, it was time to get the kids, get the youngest from tutoring, take the boy to ball practice, dinner. . . in short no samples tonight, but i'm going to try to make time tomorrow.
