Good opportunity...

So, in about 3 weeks I'm starting on my major assesment piece for year 10 Woodwork. Normally people make coffee tables or something, but I was thinking about making a cab. It'd be a pretty sweet project..
Seeing as though I can make pretty much anything I want, I was thinking something crazy..something along the lines of..8 X 12?
I wanted to get the speaker impedance sorted though. I was hoping someone like Mike or Doog could clarify this for me? I'm pretty shit at electronic stuff..
I'd need 16 ohms for the head, and I was thinking of using Celestion rocket 50's, 8 ohm speakers.
Would I be right in thinking that I could wire the 8 speakers simmilar to this, and acheive a 16 ohm output?
4 8ohm speakers wired like that would equal 8ohms, right?
Could I just add on the other 4 speakers wired in parallel pairs to this and get the 16 ohms needed?

I'm probably not the person to be posting here, given that I can't answer your questions, but wouldn't something with a combination of speakers be more useful, like a (1x15,4x12,2x10). Just a thought, as an 8x12 is basically just a full stack.
Either way, it sounds like a cool project.

That would net you 1/(1/(8+8 ) + 1/(8+8 )) == 8 ohms. Not 16.

Just thinking dude, people normally do coffee tables and the like because it gets the grades, whereas a cab is essentially a box, something even I, the humble electronics student, could knock up.
Have I got the wrong end of the stick here? Is the piece supposed to be a functioning item?

Yeah but a cab is basically a rearrange bookshelf and pretty much a coffee table as well when you think about the amount of joins etc. And interesting furniture/speaker comibination would be cool and have something like a 1x15 in it.
The reason the stack came about was because a 8x12 was just two heavy.

if he does a proper, angled speaker cab with tolex or carpet covering, i'd say that's just as difficult as a coffee table or bookshelf. if you've ever looked at the inside of one, they're more complicated than a box with 4 holes in it. with the casters, input jack, and grill cover, this could be a an awesome end result. i'd only do a 4x12 or 8x10 if i were him, but it's still a great idea.

I know that. But even something furniture grade in terms of speakers would be cool. Something like those classic Fender radio designs and wouldn't be a visual black hole in most peoples living rooms.

true enough. i guess it all depends on how far he's willing to go with this.

a conbination of speakers is a great idea.
surely this has been tried before?? and if not, why not??

multi-way speaker cabs (a 15" with a 10" and a 3", for example) are pretty common, actually. they're usually used for stereos and PA's since they're having to serve out such a wide array of frequencies.

Well that's good to hear. I can use it with a head, coolz.

Aye, it
is a box. But a coffee table is really just a plank of wood with 4 legs. I'm thinking after mounting the speakers, handles, casters and doing the tolex and grill, it's a solid project to get marks.
I'm still thinking maybe 8 X 10, it seems more practical but still impressive.

Your head has one output right?
You can achieve 16 ohms with two of that configuration of 4 Series Parallel 8 ohm speakers wired in series. I think that's what you're asking right? it is totally possible, PenPen didn't read your post properly - 4 of the speakers make 8 ohms, wire another 4 the same way and stick then in series and you have your 16 ohm load.

Oh. I missed where he said can he add in a second set. Yeah, if you did a second set in series with the above then you would et 16 ohms.

That is a good idea. My friend made a Les Paul for his woodworking class in high school, it turned out really nice! He even did the carved maple top and everything! He also found an old neck on ebay that had been stolen out of the Gibson Factory before it had been placed on a body.
