The BastardCaster

I've been piecing this guitar together for the last couple of months. It's nearly complete, I just need to find a better birdge pickup (using MIM Classic Series right now). I have made more progress than the picures show, maybe I'll take fresh ones this weekend.

The body is Warmoth, double-bound mahogany with standard routing and a nitro finish. It's two-piece body, but you really have to look for the seam. It's nicely matched. The bridge is a Joe Barden and it came with the body (no way in hell I'm paying $125 for a freaking bridge). The body came to me nearly scratch free, but it's got a pleasing case of finish checking. I don't know if that's from the cold weather in transit. The neck is USACG, 24.75" conversion (shortscales fo' lyyyyyyyfe), ebony on maple, alabone fretmarkers, and locking Sperzels. It has a 15" radius, which is kind of wierd, but I'm pretty used to it now. There's a light poly finish on, but I think I' going to take it down as far as I can with steel wool.

I have a tortoise guard on it right now. It will eventually be routed for a humbucker in the neck position. I'm content to play it as an Esquire for now. I'm also thinking about losing the guard. I kind of like the lack of pickgaurd and the screws in the wood, like in the pics. Am I crazy? It's also a shame to cover up a top that nice. The original owner should have never used a guard in the first place. The knobs will be gold speed knobs.

I was hesitant about a mahogany body this thick, thinking it might be all dark and muddy. This slab is actually pretty midrange-y and thick. The ebony fretboard adds a little clarity I s'pose. I would really like to pick up an harmonic Design Super-90. It's a Tele bridge pickup that's built and wound like a P-90. I like the feel and sound of Gibson, but prefer the construction methods of Fender. I've been slowly moving toward preferring neck joint styles with less and less glue. I played and preferred SGs to almost anything else for awhile....ended up with all bolt-ons.

I quite like the way it looks without the pick-guard, but with the screws. It just sort of hints at the guard shape. It get the thing Icey posted, and leave it without a guard.

I agree Iceman. I'd rather see it with no pickguard than a clear guard though. That wood looks beautiful and shouldn't be covered up so any pickguard would look weird... but even if the clear pickguard would still show the wood it would still look weird... I just hate clear pickguards.

No guard, no nothing. I like teh chrome ring. No screws. Pick away. Who cares what the picks do? It's what they do. I would like chrome rings everywhere! Who needs guards? They're only fun if they are colorful and add something, like a cumberbun.

Beauty guitar. Same neck. As is.

Ooh, wow, nice. Although I find that other bit of routing quite "charming".

Thanks for the compliments guys, I think I am going to go with no guard (with the screws in). I have never found a use for the traditional Tele neck pickup, so the very least I'd want is a Strat single. I really like the idea of a neck humbucker though. I've got a Gibson 490r I wouldlike to put in there. A2 neck pickups sound great to my ear.

How 'bout a P-90? The neck pickup in my Aerodyne Tele sounds great.

That would actually be my first choice, but I don't have one.

It's such a nice guitar though. I reckon it would be worth having it the way you want.

I'm content to play it as an Esquire, with only the bridge pickup for now. I've been piecing it together for a few years now so it's not like I'm in any hurry. I'm just glad I can finally plug it in....even if the bridge pickup in crap. =D

Glad you're not putting a pickguard on. It looks great without!

speaking of p-90s if you want one i gots one in cream that i would be willing to let go for 25 shipped, its never been installed, got the pads and screws and plastic still on everything.
i would back you up if you put a p-90 in there, not a bucker tho.

Who made it? Let me think about it and get back to you.

Thanx for the tip.
