Pulling C12 seems to be the key, Andy.

Does it look like a straight cut, or do you have to jumper the two points?

edit: ne'ermind, I didn't realise there was another page.

yeah just a straight cut, C12 or C13 look like the culprits, I reckon you should give it a go on both, you can always just clip one leg - play through it with the chassis out and then solder the leg fixed if yuo don't like what you hear - could be the ticket though.

Some cunt (I don't think it was me) has glued one of the dials on, so I can't remove the PCB :x I'm just gonna end up breaking the shaft off the pot if I try any harder.

I can get at C12 and C13, but I'm a bit concerned about not being able to get at the board to put in a new cap if need be..

Should I man up and just cut it as is? I guess as long as it doesn't effect the green channel, it's not gonna cause any problems, seeing as how I pretty much never use the red channel. And I don't really see myself ever selling it..

It's working and it sounds pretty good, but it's been a while since I've heard the Ultra channel anyways. I'm gonna record a quick demo as is, then clip the cap back together and record again..

Nice!

I'm glad it sounds good mate - hopefully the clipped cap will make it more useable as a two channel amp for you.

How long should I wait to get at the chasis again? I've had it turned "on" with the IEC cable taken out the mains to try and drain it or something..

As long as you stay away from the big caps you're fine. just have one hand in your pocket.

if you're real paranoid you could use an insulated screwdriver across the power supply filter caps to discharge them.

I never bother though, I just turn straight off, no standby, take out the power lead and go to work, just be careful.

Either I didn't solder the cap back properly or there's very little difference between modded and stock. I'm guessing the former due to the talk on the Marshall forum. Ah well, I'm sure it's an improvement..

lol...

I meant to mention, there were two guys with DSL50s at the gig on Friday, the cleans were good but when they stomped into the red channel it was WAYY trebly - I guess this is what they're on about in this thread - that a bright clean tone yields ice picky distortion?

Yeah, and a bit of a drop out in low end. I tried resoldering the the cap one last time and sure I did it properly and there still wasn't really any noticable difference. Then I totally took the cap out and still no difference.

Bit of an odd one, wish I'd recorded before I even took the thing apart. Ah well.

Hm. Well strange. There was talk of C12 and C13 in that thread - which did you do? Maybe it's the other one?

Regardless I think they're treble bleed caps and maybe the difference is higher up the gain dial? or lower down? I dunno.

I took out C13. I was thinking of looking at C12 (maybe replacing it with a cap of a different value as diccussed on the forum), but I'd really want to take the input PCB out for de/soldering purposes should the effect of both caps removed be too drastic.

Gotta find a way to get the fuckin' dial off first though :x
