well, my brother had to sell his bass, and all his gear, which i was using, right i decided to play bass (as opposed to guitar) in my band. i had a squier bronco, and it had to be more interesting.
it became fretless, with a semour duncan basslines quarter pound j-bass pickup, wilkinson gold bass tuners, and some ghs flatwounds.

Does it pick up the lower strings ok with the pickup aligned like that?

Hmm. I like the green and the XXs on the neck. I also like the cover off cavity. Maybe a clear guard with a regular pup is waht you need.

I think that's a really good job. It's a bit punk rock, but whatever floats your boat I guess. The bridge pickup looks like it might be problematic, but quite interesting at the same time.

actually, the reason the pickup is slanted is so the pole pieces are as close to the string as possible. when i did have it aligned straight, the strings lined up exactly with the plastic in between the pole pieces. it sounds like an upright bass though. plus, that pickup is amazing. i wish i could fit a pickguard on it, but i dont know how i would cut it to accomodate a jbass pu.

i def dont want to put the stock pickup back in because lo and behold-
it was a strat style single coil
on a bass.
covered by a white sheath to hide it's true six-poled nature....

Yup, we took the one out of my friend's Bronco bass and threw it in the neck of my friend's strat. It sounded pretty good considering.

proof. some of the plastic came off the top of the pickup after i removed the cover, which was glued on.

also note the exposed groundwire leading to the bridge because paint filled up the wire cavity.
