Euan Does Toobs

Part 1 - Tubes Clean
Part 2 - Dirty

I think perhaps I wasn't playing the amp loud enough to great differences. Anyway, enjoy listening to the same fucking thing 22 times.

Listneing to Clean. My impressions

1) V1 is the more important position because it's teh first tube the signal hits. V2 changes all sound like the stock Orange valve.
2) JJ is different but dunno whether it is better
3) Didn't like the TAD much, seemed duller
4) Liked the non cryo Harma the better so far - more lively and more harmonics. Seems to have more gain
5) The Cryo sounded the same but with a lower noise floor.
6) The two Harmas sound more rounded and less brittle than the first setting.

Now onto dirty... thanks for doing this btw Euan, it's well interesting

You're a funny lad too.

Dirty impressions (ooh err):

1) Stock sounds good, thank god for a bit of dirt after all that clean
2) JJ (V1) is much gainier at that same setting, more upper mids, V2 sounded less bright, more stock
3) TAD V1 not as much gain as the JJ but more bass enhancement than stock, maybe a little more gain than stock, V2 sounds like stock again.
4) Harma non Cryo - same gain as the JJ but not the mid increase. Cool. V2 sounded more gainy than the stock for once.
5) Harma Cryo - my favourite again so far, sounds rounder and fatter, V2 sounds same as non cryo
6) Two Harmas sounds great.

Nice. I think I'll get Harma's next time I replace tubes.
Thanks again for doing this.

No worries Mike. I think I've come to the same conclusion as yourself. Except I actually liked the TAD over the JJ. First time heard the TAD after the JJ it felt like a positive change in the sound.

It was a nice experiment to see how thing preamp valves really shape things, and if you can tell the cryo treatment makes a difference. Certainly there is less noise at higher gain too.

Thanks for listening.

Another interesting thing was the Harmas were visably running cooler than all the other valves. Don't know what is up with that like.

Construction.

Some tubes do not have visible heating elements.

No worries. The most of the effort was on removing that damn screw and then waiting about for tubes to cool down and then heat up again. It was a nice experiment and at least I know some of the stuff I have read is truth now. Or I have the experience to back it up.

Fuck man, I sound like a total heavy breathing perv. I should have also probably taken the random pauses where I drink some tea.

Think Mike summed it up pretty well.
Was interesting to hear the subtle differences.
Think that the two Harmas sounded great :)
