I'm running a tiny terror into a jensen c12n and its making some real weird noises when the gain is turned up, its not an amp dieing kinda sound it sounds kinda like the speaker is on its last legs, is there any visible sign to a speakers death?

You could take the speaker out and look at the voice coil when yuo're playing - does this happen when the gain is up and the volume still low or at high sound levels only?

I think it might just be high gain

In that case I doubt doing what you're doing has blown it, it may have been blown before and is juist fucked. Do you have anotehr amp you can put through it or another speakler you can connect to the TT?

Tubes can still be iffy brand new, maybe if the amp's been knocked about a bit in transit.

I have bad luck with amps. I blew 3 speakers of 3 different amps in a year

I've bought two amps this year, one came with a dodgy preamp tube, the other being a TT kept crapping out on me and I returned it for a TT with a dethreaded screw and wonkiness. I've got a feeling the don't build amps like they used to

yeah so I'm pretty much positive its the pre-amp tube, I just got my hotrod and ran it through the cabinet and it sounds sweet, so I'm getting a replacement tt tomorrow, but part of me is kinda not keen, I'm a little bit worried about the clean headroom on the tt, then again it has a dodgy pre-amp tube so that probably isn't helping, well I will decide tomorrow night if I wanna refund and stick to my good ole hot rod
any other tt owners found the lack of clean headroom to bother them?

wasn't there someone else here who had trouble with their tiny terror right out of the box?

they don't have a huge amount of clean headroom, but that's not what the amp is designed for - it's designed to be crunchy and raucous at band volume but great sounding clean and crunchy when recording at low volume. I love mine.

Your crappy preamp tube is possibly limiting the amount of clean headroom available, although like Mike said, it's not an amp designed for clean loudness.
