my black strat UPGRADED by OG

Post by robroe »

ok you guys you all know by now what my black strat looks like in its present incarnation. black covers, black top hats, mexican tele switch,

Image

it has a jagstang neck pickup in the neck, and a bronco pickup in the bridge, i left the middle squier pickup because i never use it.

this is where i want to go with it.

im sending the neck to rob and he is going to tint it MIJ/CIJ jaguar orangey and spray the shit out of it with poly. 50 coats
then he is going to make me a new pickguard with out the middle pickup and without the 3 way selector in parchment or mint. (im leaning towards parchment)
shades of the ritchie blackmore strat from the 90's, or prince's more modern one sans all the floyd bullshit.

now i have to decide on how i want to lay out my controls. i have it narrowed down to 2 ideas.

#1. knob, 3 way toggle in the middle possition, on-onon-on. knob
Image

#2. knob knob, MUSTANG SWITCH
Image

or option #3. both toggle and mustang switch. on, onon, on toggle and mustang switch phase things

here is richies old one....his new one has all that gay roland shit on it that i don't give a shit for

Cool project. Option1. Toggles look sexy in odd places on guitars.

I like option 1. The mustang slider switch doesn't look that good on a strat. And I like parchment PG idea as well.

i dig the first idea too, the mustang switch in that spot may require routes to the body as well.
you should photoshop a cream and a mint guard next to eachother to see how they look next to eachother.

If you're going for an on-onion-on setup with two pickups, think about setting up a "blender" knob. That way you can get the everything-on sound and then use the blender to back off some of the bridge pickup or some of the neck pickup. The selector switch determines which pickup gets "blended" and which stays full-on. Super versatile. You get lots of subtle variations on that bridge-neck combo sound. I have my 3-pickup Strat wired this way. Do it do it do it. You'll need 3 knobs plus a switch tho, I think, if you want to keep a master tone and a master volume. Maybe there's a pull-pot trick you can do, but I personally don't like pull-pots on guitars.

would it be too hard to switch the angle of the bridge pickup ala' dick dale ?

Image

i sketched some shit on the pickguard....my strat body is routed for a humbucker so i wouldn't have to fuck it up at all.

so like

cream guard
no middle pickup
reverse bridge pickup
no slider switch
no 5 way switch
3 holes for knobs / toggles

....ohh also i should warn you that i dremmuled out the ends of the pickup routes on that guard to fit solid plastic covers. so they are a little bigger than a standard route you would normally on any old pickguard tracing.....i did such a mega fucking awesome job at it that you cant tell. other than the routes getting super close to the screw holes on each end.

flipping is fine, you are sure that there is enough room in the body tho right?
i would have to get it done and you love it and then find out that 1 mm of the side of the pup touches the body routes.
but if you have a dremel you could always dremel out the wood a bit.
i will just make an exact copy of your guard minus the middle pickup.
i'll be sure to take MEGA pics.

yea. the route is retangular. so if it fits one way on an angle its gotta fit the other way. rad.

This is going to look brill.

Why you want the flippy'd pickup? For less treble on the skinny strings?

rob, i should also warn you that the headstock didn't exactly like getting stuffed into MEGATUBE.

cut open the flater end thru the tape, take out one wad of news paper, then a second wad...then try and wrap your index finger around the roundy part of the headstock and pull it out that way. you might wanna give the tube a sqeeze to loosen the headstock.

robroe, shut the fuck up and deal with mega tube!!!!!!
it came in today man, actually everything did, kinda too perfect.
but anywho i went ahead and got things ready and sprayed one coat on the neck just as a tester coat, and then immediatley after that the button on the cap broke off and lacquer went spraying everywhere, but your neck was saved. that thing is nice!
for a squire neck its amazing, good wood, good feel, nice frets. seems like its a standard mexi strat neck with bad tuners on it.
still have not got the ph material tho, its comming from washington.
