...help me pick a pedal!!!

...so I have the jag and the mustang and a very warm (warm for solid state, warm for anything) 60 watt solid state amp with enough headroom that well, it never breaks up, even to 10.
Need distortion. Pedal can't be too noisy as the jag has unpotted pickups and will probably stay that way for a while.
The sound I'm looking for is grindy, even harsh, heavy. Pedal I have now gives a very rounded, smooth tone, I don't want that.
People have said Rat, but would that be correct? If not, any suggestions?

There's always ZVex's Fuzz Factory...
But I'm really digging this guy right here these days:

Some tubular distortion.
As for the Rat, that's the distortion Blur uses, no? I vant vone.

i'm not such a fan of reg distortion boxes
the zvex machine is on my do want in 2008 list along with a nice wah and volume pedal
but i'm hoping to find it secondhand because it's pricey, there's so many possibilities there tho

Hm. I wouldn't describe the English Muff'n as warm. In my experience it's quite harsh, a lot of highs and upper midrange. It sounds good, but it would be very very bright with a Jaguar. At least mine is with my JM.

The Zvex BOR is a certain DIY pedal with a SHO in front of the circuit for the boost. SHO itself being a ledendary FET based booster. Z.Vex time machine strikes again with his unique design. It is a good pedal, but expensive given it's supposed R&D.

Euan, SHO stands for wut? Shortscale Harmonic Overdrive?
Wikipedia tells me a SHO looks like this:

Doubtless one of those old bamboo FETs they used to have.

SHO = Zvex Super Hard On. It is a FET booster that can really really really push the front end of an amp. It also has a really high input impedence, I think of about 5M so that when engaged your guitar seems to sparkle. At least single coils do on my Mustang. No so much my Wideranger bucker.

I gets it. Thought it was some generic term.

...hmm, that sounds nearly perfect. I want to get a brighter distorted sound from this amp... which I'm stuck with for a while
(oddly, my jaguar has a... thicker sound than my mustang through it)
I've heard muffs can get muddy, is that the case? (that english muffn looks fucking amazing btw)
thanks for all the help...

The Big Muff and English Muff'n aren't similar in any way. The English Muff'n is a very Marshall-like distortion and the Muff is a fuzz. Big Muffs tend to get muddy, but that's mostly with humbuckers. The English Muff'n can get ear piercing and painfully brigh, but it can also be smooth and lovely. It's a nice pedal. I need to get a new power adaptor for mine, it got stuck under an office chair and now makes noise n stuff.
