the white penguin retails at almost $4000, you can get a nice custom color vintage jag for that.
go for the jaguar, you won't be sorry.

i'm not a fan of this gold-on-white. it's way too gaudy.

i like it though. has anyone played a penguin? ive played a couple of Jags and liked them but I have never got my hands on a penguin. all ive heard from a penguin is the sounds of Michael Guy Chislett from the Academy Is and Hillsong United

that lower switch up near the top looks like it could get in the way. i like the look of the guitar, but i bet i'd like it better in chrome hardware instead of gold.

If I could afford a penguin, I'd be all over that like white on rice.

First, you should play the gretsch before dropping $2,800.
(BUY)

Second, Gretschs are nice, but I personally don't see alot of value in them. In other words, yr not really getting anything you couldn't get for half the price.

I'd go for a used japanese or american Jaguar, and invest any money you save in parts upgrades.

I don't get Gretsch's. Gretcshes. Gretcsh'. Whatever.

I think they look awful, and are bulky to play.

I think gretsch guitars have a feel and sound that are great. YOu kind of have to fight them and you get more mojo or something for that. That being said, I would never pay the $ that they go for (although when MF was blowing out the tennessee Rose's for 999 USD I was really tempted. That is alot better that 2800 though for a penguin.

Personally, I think the gretsch are great, just not my thing. I would go for the jag, and a jazzy...By both for the same $ as the penguin.

If I were to go for a semi-hollow Gretsch like a Penguin, I'd certainly make the compromise and patiently wait for a Duo Jet to fall into my hands. You can find both black and sparkle'd Terada-era Jets floating around for well under $1200 in the States, the filtertron'd ones not a far cry from Gibson LP Deluxes in the tone dept, yet chambered and decently mojo-laden.

Funny you mention Michael Guy Chislett, I imagine he'd probably tell you the same(doesn't he play a Black Penguin?) and to be "a better steward of your finances". :P It's also coincidental since the guys on our team were joking how the opening riff from "Future Decided"(which we play regularly) sounds like a spooky movie theme, so just yesterday I mixed in a goofy amount of sound effects/organ into the original Hillsongs United track to make a silly Halloween version. You might find it entertaining.

dude, that's a lot fo money for a guitar and you're not even gonna test first ?
plus, a gretsch penguin and a fender jaguar are very very very different kinds of guitars

what are you after ? sound wise, feel wise, looks wise etc

so far i've been able to play a few lefty gretsches (tennessee rose, the greeny anniversary one, a duo yet and a brian setzer nashville.
i've also played a few lefty jags (cij ones) and they couldn't be more different.

if you can afford to spend so much money on a guitar i'd consider looking around for a nice 60's jag .. seems like a better investment to me, you could get something really unique
that being said, if you really want the penguin and you've played it and it just suits you better ...

i still think it's a lot of money for a guitar and i would never feel comfortable playing gigs with such exspensive guitars.
