i bought this little gem yesterday:

Image

boss rv-5 digital reverb.

i got to play with it at rehearsal today and during our recording sessions. initial reactions:

Spring: very well done. warm and lush sounding, and i love that "boing" water drop sound at high volume or if you play hard. i will probably use this setting alot.

Plate: interesting sounding. sounded really spacious. im gonna play with it more.

Hall
: very nice. sounds like a huge church. this one will get used a lot as well.

Room: also really nice. sounds insane at long time settings.

Gate: what the fuck is this. i am gonna play with this more, see what i can do with it.

Modulate
: my friend madison told me i should buy it for this setting alone. that kids knows a thing or two about cool sounding stuff. super lush, awesome modulation, and freaking dreamy as hell. im gonna use this alot, too.

so initially, it sounds pretty good. i used it in front of my drummers roc pro 1000 combo since i didnt have my ac30 at the studio today, and i was pretty please with the sounds. no tone sucking, and it doesn't sound "too digital" to me.

i love the tone control. it allows you to dial in that perfect ambiance. the time setting is cool. i love the longer spring settings.

all in all, first impression =

i will give it some time before i make my final judgment on it, but i think i did good. it plays very nice with my space echo.

fuck the haters.

I've wanted to get one of those for a long time. I probably will in the summer.

gate cut the trails? Gate sounds good with beats or drum machines.
This too is on my list, +1!

Gated reverb is one of the biggest things in the cliche 80s pop sound, especially with drums. It's very unfashionable at the moment as a result, although of course some electro stuff will use it for that very reason.

two week update:

i find myself using the spring setting alot. i LOVE the water droplet sound, and its just so cool. the time knob really opens up alot of variations, as well as the tone knob.

i am VERY happy with this pedal. i have it in front of my ac30 and it sounds fantastic. i may end up sticking it on the loop and leaving it on top of my amp to free up some space on my pedalboard.

highly recommended!
