Two projects: Prehistoric Mustang/Petrified Jagmaster
Hello,
I am considering having a Mustang pickguard made of wood. The body I have is made from a reissue template, but does not have any holes yet, so maybe this is a non-issue.
I would be painting it to look like petrified wood. Obviously, I would like to use real petrified wood, but I can only assume the cost of having it cut would be far too great, and it would be to fragile; which I found out when I first wanted a pickguard made of dinosaur coprolite.
I figure if I am going to consider using fake tortoiseshell (as it is the only normal pickguard material that would work with the project I am doing), why not use fake petrified wood?
Anyway, is there anyone here who offers cutting services, or knows where I could have this done? I assume this can't be any more difficult than cutting plastic. I would love to do this myself, but unfortunately, I do not have the tools required.
I should note that the pickguard only needs to be cut for one slanted single coil pickup -- no switches.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: Mustang Pickguard
Have you ever looked at dinosaur coprolite once it has been sliced? It's beautiful and full of rich colours -- much like petrified wood. A lot of times it resembles something close to tortoiseshell.bubbles_horwitz wrote:eww. why on earth would you want such a thing?Narco Martenot wrote:I first wanted a pickguard made of dinosaur coprolite.
The idea of using something from a dinosaur is also somewhat amusing and interesting to me.

I'm totally down with the idea. This is right up my alley of weirdness.Narco Martenot wrote:Have you ever looked at dinosaur coprolite once it has been sliced? If I had some real tortoiseshell or mother of pearl material, I would totally use it. Obviously, real tortoiseshell would set me back several thousands of dollars and possibly a nice prison sentence. Real mother of pearl would probably shatter (just my guess, as thin mother of pearl buttons on poorly made clothing often break easily).bubbles_horwitz wrote:it just seems like such an odd choice. what's wrong with regular (and readily available) tortoiseshell?
I wanted to try and stay away from non-natural materials for this project as much as I could. Even the strap will be made of cashmere and leather.
I also wanted to have something from a dinosaur on this guitar. Without the coprolite, I have decided to make the knobs out of bone -- preferably from that of a triceratops.

Just cut up a vinyl copy of Slippery When Wet. It'll be far easier to track down, and you can still say "dinosaur shit" when someone asks what it's made of.

No, it is not illegal. There are companies who make furniture out of it. It's not hard to find; especially on eBay (usually smaller pieces).bassintom wrote:On teh durugs...A bone from a triceratops.![]()
Petrified wood is not available comercially. It is against the law to have it I believe.
Organic Mustang
It's also possible to make petrified wood in a few days with certain chemicals. I don't know why someone is not taking advantage of this as there is a demand for petrified wood. Maybe it's too expensive to do, I do not know.
