hey guys/gals.

is it better to spray competition stripes FIRST. let them dry. then mask over them and finish the guitar with the main body color?

or is it best to spray the stripes over body's main color?

both paints are going to be metallic acrylic lacquer.

I haven't tried this yet, but it you spray the competition stripe first, that means you have to coat the whole body in order to get a consistent and smooth surface right? It kinda makes sense though because you'll only have to tape off the stripes when you paint again as opposed to protecting the whole body to spray 2 stripes, but then again... that might work too. I guess which one is less inconvenient?

White on ice blue was an excellent choice which brings me to my 2nd question....
Are u sure u want a metallic stripe on metallic paint? If you're not careful with color choice it might become a nightmare.

yet, someone on reranch says you get a more consistant stripe with sharper lines if you spray the stripe first. so i was curious if anyone on here has done either method. i'll probably follow that kids instructions because he and his dad build a LOT of guitars.

soemone else doing comp stripes on a jazzmaster i see. that's what i'm doing

and why would having a metallic color on a metallic color become a nightmare?

i think pearloid inlay stripes would make me vomit all over everything in existence. [unless the stripes are on a duesenberg]

thanks for the replies.. i'll just test spray a block of wood with both methods before giving it a final go.

and if stripe store is for vinyl graphics... i'm NOT using vinyl. i could cut my own stripes for free out of various metallics and reflective vinyl i have at home. paint just looks better.

...I think she's figuring on the whole body (or a sizeable portion of it) being painted stripe color, and then the stripey section masked off while the rest of the body is sprayed over...

Can't think of any probs if you only spray the stripe part first, in fact I plan on doing this in... hopefully a few days lol. (thinking either pearl orange/red, or surf pearl/pearl white)

this is how they do stripes on cars, if it's not a decal

It'll work if you pick the right colors. Otherwise the stripe will just blend into the background

It's also just me being a design snob. Personally I'd go with a nonmetallic stripe to accent the metallic finish.

i'm not worried about the colors not working. i was more curious about if there were some strange functional reason metallic over metallic wouldn't work, perhaps it could blow up the world and ruin the universe.

there have been metallic over metallic stripes in the past that have worked quite well. pretty sure john mayer had a gold metallic strat with a burgundy mist stripe. though his frat-rock ass is undeserving of stripes.

when i put comp stripes on my mustang bass (suck it mike! ) i bought them from this dude on teh bayz0rz who makes comp stripe decals for most fender body styles. and they looked real good. i'd go that route. but i'm a lazy non-paintin' mumwafuckwa.

When i painted my '72 Mustang I went all red first as a base coat. Then I covered where the stripes are and painted it orange. Magical!!! The world needs more orange guitars.

actually, i love that orange mustang. the japanese orange/yellow ones with stripes are gorgeous. i'm still trying to source my fecking paint. i have paint codes, but it's a weird color. i dont know if i want to shell out 22 bucks a can for tower paint to mix me some aerosol or just find an equivalent.

even re-ranch would be cheaper, but his color isn't quite what i'm looking for. [fender never made it]
