I had originally planned to do this after my JM project was done but I came across these pickups/pickguard/pots on ebay for cheap (I think) and snatched it up ($125). I think they were cheap 'cause the guy wanted money order only and no one was willing to take the chance. I never realized how huge those Wide Rangers are compared to the Squier pups.



The pickguard had to be squeezed in in order to get it to fit.



Here you can see where I'll have to do a bit of routing.




The only downside is that they didn't come with screws/springs.

My questions, dear Shortscale are:

Anyone know if these (B) are the right ones? Also, how do I tell which is the neck and which is the bridge pickup?

I 'd throw the one with the higher output on the bridge.

hey, cool project. wow, I never realized they were so big either.

yea, use a multimeter to figure out which one has the higher ohms. but maybe fender never made them like that and they're interchangeable. It's likely since since CBS did anything to cut costs.

regarding the screws, id get some humbucker screws, seems more logical.

the screws you need can be found here.

Was that a spray can refin? It look sgreat.

Thanks guys, I borrowed my sister's boyfriend's multimeter - one was 8.3k and the other was 8.5k.

Thanks, yeah, it was. Krylon colour and Deft clear. There are some sand throughs and next time I"ll use higher grit sandpaper to get a mirror-like shine but for a first attempt I'm happy with it.

I routed the body by hand with a dremel:



Took some finagling but managed to fit the gigantic WRs in there:

Now I just need to screw the pickguard on get the screws for the pups and set it up. The low E doesn't quite line up with the neck pup. I don't think this will be a problem, will it?

no, thats fine, my gfs p-90 bridge pup doesn't match up at all cept the d and g string.
you did a really fucking good job with that dremel, srsly, kudos!
i am shit with a dremel, im always burning out the engine, losing parts, breaking the sand grit stuff.

Thanks man, coming from you that's high praise. I can't wait to get the pickup height screws and try the new pups out.

...yeah, I approve of this project entirely.

How did you cut the pickguard that cleanly, dremel too? I'll have to do something similar soon as I get the courage...

I can't take the credit for the pickguard. It came with the pups in the auction. Good thing too, 'cause I thought they pickups were the same size and I don't really have a means to cutting them cleanly.
