Pretty cool, but the Mascis Jazzy is horrible. I hated the thing when I played it.

I think a Fender Jazzblaster MIM or MIJ (basically under $800) would destroy the Jag HH and really anything else in the price range. That is perhaps the one signature guitar I can think of that I'd buy.

A custom shop reliced Ranaldo Jazzmaster would be totally lame......

Sonic Youth is easily as known or more known / way more influential than Dinosaur Jr. They better get some love soon.

Maybe in the US. Dinosaur are much better known over here, i dont know about the rest of europe/world. Mascis is also more widely respected as a player as well.
I can only put that down to the lack of Sonic Youth tours here and inconsistent album releases.

Dont get me wrong, i love Sonic Youth but Ranaldo is a bit "yeah, everyone copied us with Jazzmasters, blah...". I like the fact J is quite humble about it all.

Honestly, I didn't hear much about Dino Jr when I was growing up in the DC area. But I have friends from from New England, they all love Dino Jr up there. It makes sense since that's around where they're from.

There is some truth to what lee is saying about kevin shields getting the jazzmaster idea from J. Kevin is a big Dino Jr fan and he owns one of J's guitars. I wouldn't say that he stole the idea from him though.

Ngz. I've been around the music scenes since 1987, i'm 36 yrs old, i saw Dino, Sonic Youth and MBV play live around 1989 onwards.
Dino are bigger and more respected in the uk over that period, fact.
Kevin Shields was part of an offset revolution and he also used Jaguars, Spacemen 3 were using Jaguars in 86/87, Will Sergeant (Echo & the Bunnymen) was using Jaguars in 84/85 and Jazzmasters... it goes on. Truth is, like J said, Strats and Teles have always been at the expensive end of things whilst guitar stores could'nt give offsets away. No one wanted them, so the poor indie label musicians lapped up the chance of owning an original vintage Fender the best way they could. Same with Cobain.
But when Cobain became a housewives favourate, Fender Japan reissued their finest and as they say; the rest is history.

How about Tom Verlaine ?He was one of the early proponents of the Jazzmaster in the prepunk days.

KS: My first guitar was an SG, then I got a Les Paul copy. Then I went through a phase of 335 copies. Then I bought that Ibanez Jazzmaster I mentioned. It looked good--that's why I got it.

well holy shit. actually, thinking about it, I do remember watching that video before and thinking something funny was going on with those pickups. this must be one of those late 70s ibanez's when they were making all these copies of things.

Most importantly... did he record with that guitar? what does it sound like anyway?
