i'd say go for the JM. Ive played gibbys and they feel weird, especially after being weaned on Fenders.

Get whatever feels comfortable to play and modify it in future if you're looking for different sounds. In this day and age of Novak Humbuckers under a Jazzmaster cover and single-coil sized humbuckers there's plenty of options later down the track to modify to suit taste/wider variety available.
Personally I'd go the Jazzmaster simply because of the neck.
