The Actual Jag-Stang Owners Club

Post by luke »

If you own an actual original (I mean either the "first" or "second" batch) MIJ Fender Jag-Stang, post in this thread. I am interested to know who actually still has one. If you've had one, post too. No fake mahogany ones or whatever Icey's is made of allowed. ;)

I've noticed that many people have a disdain for Jag-Stangs. I've never played one (only seen them on the internetz), but I own and adore my Japanese '69 RI Mustang, which I assume to be pretty similar in many ways.

Do people hate Jag-Stangs because of the annoying association with the Kurdtz? Or is it just a bad guitar? If so, what's wrong with it?

I still have the one I built about 2 years ago. It's not a genuine Fender but it has a '69 mustang neck on it.I don't play it as much as I used to but it keeps my mustang from getting lonely.

most people just think it's ugly. that, and fender released a supposedly unfinished guitar, as kurt killed himself before all of his design issues were resolved.
When I die, they'll say, 'He couldn't play shit, but he sure made it sound good!'

It's a wool factory. Even with bypassed tone controls, a straightened bridge humbucker route to align pole pieces and a bright humbucker replacement like a Seymour Duncan JB it is STILL wooly and undefined. that block of wood is incapable of any bright and spanky clean tones. The proof of it's inadequacy is that it's pickups sound fantastic in other guitars, even cheaper POS guitars.

I just think it's a mess, it's awkward and doesn't sound great. I prefer Mustangs wholeheartedly, so similar but not as.. deficient as the Jag-Stang in my opinion.

I spent lots of money, time, effort and tears modifying the crap out of mine but it was never capable of being the guitar I wanted it to be

I eventually sold it and felt instantly better about my life. After I played a Telecaster for the first time I couldn't believe how easy it could be to live with a guitar.

back in the day it was known as the soapstang

it had a jb and a sjag3. mud city.

the sjag-1 alone turns this thing into an guitar with alot more mid and treb. any humbucker, or overwound single coil you put in the thing is mud city....which, to be fair is what the guitar was built for kinda.

I just realised I never played one gig with my Jag-Stang, I even think I played a few with my beat to smithereens Squier Strat (now property of JD). That says it all really.

I played so many with mine, pretty much every gig for 8 or 9 years...but it was definitely the set up that worked for me.
My amp at the time was a valvestate VS100R, and the two were perfect together. That amp sounded incredibly harsh and trebly with some other guitars.
But you're right Mike, through a nice warm valve amp it's really wooly.
Having said that, and this probably come from playing it for so long, every time I pick it up the neck just feels right and comfortable...more so than any of my other guitars.

Yeah, I imagine an insanely bright amp would suit it well.
