I got one of the new Squier Deluxes (Gotta tell you, its a nice guitar even tho is a Strat,) Fell in love with the color and bought it, however, I'd like to do a few minor mods. I want to vintage tint the neck. Has anyone done one here? Would you stain and clearcoat over the frets? Is that gonna be ok? Any help or tips would be appreciated.

The Store also had the Elvis Costello Jazzy (Pretty Nice) and a Mexican Jaguar HH (The neck felt disgustingly sticky and shitty on the Jag, and I do like glossy necks) The rosewood fretboard seemed/felt like it had been clearcoated. Maybe a bad one slipped through QA...

Anyways here are some pix of the new beast. The best Squier I've owned hands down, does not feel cheap in any way. Only some minor dicking around with the neck and bridge and now its perfect to my liking.

Some people were talkin' 'bout clearcoating the neck some where before... What I got from it is that they did put clear of the frets but chipped it away... They may have also said it was a bad idea and wanted another way to get rid of the clear...

Tribi, you might want to look at Reranch for dozens of neck treatment variations.

When I have done it, there was already damage to the neck, or it had been sanded, etc. The proper way to do it is to sand off the poly, spray it with tinted clear, then cover with more clear until you have the desired density. Since you can't use catalyzed polyurethane like Fender does (without pro equipment) you are limited to old school nitro lacquer in cans, or acrylic lacquer in cans. Acrylic will take much less time to cure, so you can wet sand with baby oil and fine grit wet paper (800-2000 grit). The cool thing about nitro is that it will age and crack over time, making the neck look even older.

Would the satin coat that's already in the neck work? instead of stripping it, shooting clear, staining and clear again?I was thinking of staining over the satin finish (Don't really want to strip it) and then clearcoating.

Will that give me different results?

when i did my tele i cleared the whole thing and had no problems.
when i did robs neck there was some chipping around the frets but i drop filled and it turned out ok.

Cleared? As in strip? So you've done it both ways. Is the difference really noticeable?

I tinted a Hello Kitty neck, I just lightly sanded the original finish and applied reranch tinted clear (nitro) over top of it until I liked the color, then sealed it with a coat of clear (poly).

Yes it does, I agree. Sounds alright, happy with it for now.

lightly sand the original finish, spray RR neck amber , then clear coat it . its easy done many and they look great.

that guitar looks nice. I love how the edges look super rounded.

actually that's how it should look if properly set up. you are supposed to be able to use the vibrato to go up and down.

Mmmm.. I was going to get more springs but that does make sense. So fuck it, Ill leave it like this since the action is almost perfect why bother messing it up.
