Duo-Sonic pickups

Duo-Sonic pickups
Hi, I have a 93 MIM Duo-Sonic and I want to replace the stock pickups. Actually, I really like the pickups, but from one day to another the neck pickup started to work intermittenly. I took the guitar to a tech, and found out it is was dead.
Now I'm going to buy some new ones, replacing both. The thing is that as I compared the sound of my guitar to a mim strat, I notice mine has a hotter sound. So the thing is that I don't know what type of pickups were the stock ones, and what is their output.
I've been doing some google research, and some say that 90's duo-sonic came with the same pickups of the mim strats of that time (apparently some kind of ceramics). Others believe there are some kind of tex-mex.
Hopefully someone will know anything about this... I would like to obtain an upgrade without making a radical change, an one of the things I liked was the output of those single coils.
pd:just saw the new squier duo.. that's niice
Thanks a lot! and sorry for my english.

welcome to the boards.
i have a 90's duo sonic but it's the squier version. not sure if the pickups are the same or not. they were defanatly ceramic though.
i replaced mine with seymour duncan SJAG3's and then replaced those with SJAG1's
Sjag stands for seymour Jaguar pickup. 1 is vintage sounding, 2 is wound hot, and 3 is quarter pounder, very heavy sounding. for such a small guitar the sjag3's overpowered the gutiar and made it sound muddy.
the SJAG1's I have in it right now sound perfect to me. its meant to be a replacement for stock pickups in a fender Jaguar. wound a little hotter than a standard strat pickup. they work excelent clean with lots of reverb, and when pushed crunch up very nicely with distortion

if you don't want to blow tons of money on the SJAG pickups, i suggest these from GFS.
http://store.guitarfetish.com/sttalstpiset.html
Texas Strat pickups. you get 3 for $47.95 USD. one pickup is wound at 5.3, one at 5.5 and 1 pickup is wound at 8.7.
so if you want your pickups to sound similar you can use the two wound at 5...or if you want your bridge to be a bit louder you can throw the 8.7 in the rear.
here is a link for the jaguar pickups to put in the duo sonic.
http://www.guitarpartsresource.com/pickups_sdjag.htm
they are around 100 bucks for the pair.

If you think of god as a pair of pants, a spiritualist thinks he needs pants, in fact he wants pants but none of the conventional types of pants seem to fit just right, so he makes his own pants and is happy that his knees are no longer cold.-fibus
I have the squier 90s duo sonic and comparing it to the pics of aen's MIM, the pickups are definitely different. They look like MIM strat pickups (the poles are "radiused"). you're right though, they could be MIM tex mex pickups (which just means the bridge pickup is much hotter, if I'm correct). if you have a multimeter, you could measure the resistance of the pickups and that would give you a good idea of their output so you could match them precisely. or you could just try out different pickups until you found some that you like. GFS sells good tex mex pickups if you want to try something out relatively inexpensive.
cogito ergo sum...thing or other...

thanks everybody for your help !.... I've been lurkin around and you definitly have some really nice guitars here!
I guess is a good idea to start with the multimeter, to get a reference of the stock pickups. Thinking about the Jaguar's ..
-and this is just guessing- does it cause any trouble those having different poles and strings spacing?
GFS Tex-mex look like a good deal.. Antiquitys may be to expensive for me ($140 for the pair).
Anyone heard of Tonerider pickups? I've been given good references price vs/ quality.
Thank you a lot!!!

i went to that tone rider website....
http://www.tonerider.com/dealers.html
thier list of dealers is very small. i haven't heard of any of these shops.
"sheets and sons music" website is called maxmusicusa.com which makes no sense...when you click on the link...its broken. not a good sign.
the next dealer down is RH factor guitars
from what i can tell, all they sell is REALLY EXPENSIVE kits ....and tonerider pickups ? so its a guitar shop that doesn't sell guitars.
http://rhfactorguitars.mybisi.com/all-c ... Page1.html
the site under that called pickers parts sells fender guitar bodies....i have no idea if they are used or new...it doesn't say...odd
http://www.pickersparts.com/khxc/index. ... itarbodies
ok so the first three american dealers for these pickups look sketchy at best. the first link didn't even work. ok so the USA shops didn't work out lets try the one from canada called Ezra Music
http://www.ezramusic.net/
you get a splash page with a jpg of some parts laying on a black back ground and a link to thier store
you click on that link
http://www.ezramusicshop.com/
and you get this....

mind you i got all these links off of the official tonerider website "dealer" section, i didn't pull them out of my ass somewhere.
i think consumer beware is an understatement with these guys

if i was the dude making tonerider pickups and was a new startup company, and was charging 100 dollars a pop for a set of pickups that are made in china, i would make damn sure that the links i have up on my website for my customers to go and buy them had better work.
by having broken links on your website it makes your website looks amateur...100 dollar pickups are not for amateurs.
by having links to vendors that don't have thier shit together and are under construction it makes it impossible for the consumer to purchase your goods even if they wanted to drop 100 dollars on a pickup made in china with a website admin that doesn't keep track of the 10 or so people selling his product.
its just not good business.
