So without any knowledge or experience whatsoever...I purchased a little workstation.

I do have from previous times when we all had bought stuff in a shared studio
a focusrite vocal pre amp
a power conditioner
a headphone mix/amp
a Rodes NT1 and an SM57

so I should be able to start rolling ok

I've heard good things about that unit. Just start recordin' some stuff and have fun.

My bass player has the AW1600 which we use for all our recording it has a CD burner which is handy as fuck, does the AW16G have one too?

I don't know much about it to be honest but he is well up on all that stuff & reckons them to be ace. I do know that it has some pre set mix functions which work quite well, you can tweak individual tracks once you have choosen a suitable mix.

We have not really used it properly, just for me to lay down some guitar parts for the bassist to work his parts out.
The recordings on our myspace were done on the desk, just mic'd up the amps & kit at rehearsal then played it live together. I think the only gripe with these machines is the screen size, they seem to have everything else effects/drum patterns etc.

I think the Maps guy recorded his album We Can create on the AW16G.

I think the awg came after the 1600 but not as many features like motorized faders. but I think it is supposed to be a little more user friendly.

I swear by my AW16G

quick rundown on the other AW16.... the 16G came first, and was available with or without a cd burner... the 1600 is an updated version of the AW16G that always has a cd burner, XLR/TRS hybrid sockets on all inputs (the 16G has 2 XLRS and the rest are 1/4") and also a USB port (the AW16G has no obvious method for interfacing with a computer, though can apparently be used as a logic and/or protools controller). And I guess the 1600 has motorized faders too? Cool. Only the 32 track version had motorized faders when I bought my 16G. Also, the 1600 is the same price that the 16G was, so I'm pretty sure they were just updating it a smidgen to compete with the ever-evolving home recording de factos.

I've had my 16G for years and am still not up on everything it does... but even the most basic functions come with that sort of familiar analogue portastudio-like feel, very intuitive. It's super powerful, and if you can't get on with it, digital portastudios are not your thing.

Perhaps I can do a super easy quickstart-type vid for you where I record and master something, having some problems with my vid editing software though. Sloan might already have something that demonstrates it, he uses his to do all his video demos' sondz.
