Jazzmaster trem lock system?

Post by roachello »

Can someone educate me on the purpose of a jazzmaster's tremolo lock? How does it work and what is it used for? Thank you

you set up the trem so that the button slides in between the two plates when your in tune. being that its floating, if you snap a string all the strings go out of tune. the idea is that if you put the button in between the 2 plates it brings you back into tune to finish the song.

Nice link tribi and nice explanation Hurb. I think mine was set up too loose like this, because mine just slid around.

This was from the olden days when strings were really expensive and folks didn't take backup guitars to gigs.

Maybe the trem lock could save your ass mid-song actually, but it is a fiddly bugger.

I don't find it fiddly - it's also a handy as a midpoint in the trem's travel, a way of having something to navigate back to, trem wise (ie. you adjust spring tension 'til the tremloc works - this means you'll always have some up play and some down play on the trem). Also, it saves a lot of grief when restringing, if you take all the strings off.

i'm still looking for somewhere that sells just the lock, as mine came without one :(

i think i might just end up going with a nut/bolt that is the same height, ghetto but useful for altered tunings.

Never used it, but I have my trem set fairly tight.

Plus I've never broken a string live. Well.. guitar string.

A nice chap has just emailed me scans of the 1959 Jazzmaster manual on how to set this up...
Thanks RJ-MJ!

Mine doesn't work :? when I engage the lock, the button is sitting right on the edge of the plate by only 1mm so it just slips out. Maybe a bigger button is needed.

I mean the one on my CIJ Jag, the tremolo itself is great but the button just slips out.

the little screw right below the button adjusts the the spring tention so the plate sits perfectly over the botton if it's slid in or out. I use mine all the time and it helps if you have to tune to drop D or anything like that. just another thing you have to spend a whole 5 minutes setting up to get it to work right

nick in sirens has been using my tele with an avri trem on it,
he asked me the same thing cept i told him it was basically a nice way to garentee that if a string breaks it won't go out of tune.
ever since then he has engaged it everytime he plays it.
