Fuzz?

i want to buy a fuzz pedal, but im not sure which one to get.

ive had a look at some vids, but i still dont know. im kinda after the hendrix fuzz, so im guessing the dunlop fuzz face would be a good start?

what fuzz pedals would you peeps recomend?

A Fuzz Face would be a good place to start - just remember that its best tones are found with the "fuzz" maxed and working your guitar volume to change the grit level.

The DOD Flashback Fuzz is also good, as is the EHX Big Muff which it is based on - both of these are more of a distortion/fuzz hybrid. Mike Matthews designed the original to get the Hendrix sustain and drive through a clean Fender amp.

Mid or Neck PUP of a Strat with the volume rolled back to 6 or 7 + maxed Fuzz Face + gritty dark amp like an old marshall or tweed bassman = HENDRIXEZ!!!!

The DOD Classic Fuzz is based on a big muff, I think the Flashback Fuzz is actually based on a sillicon fuzz face.

just looked at the peachfuzz from a few posts below, is exactly the sound im looking for.

i wonder if any shops in oz get these in.

Best cheap fuzz, and the one I use for all my Jimi moments, is the Danelectro French Toast Octave fuzz. It's a clone of the Foxx tone machine (the inventor of the circuit is now CEO of Danelectro, so there's no intelectual copyright issues) - a proper Foxx branded one will set you back six times more than you pay for the dano. The octave is switchable on and off, and the pedal sounds great in either mode. It's not the most subtle of predals, but it does an awful lot - octave fuzz, sili-fuzzface-ish sounds, muff-y sounds. If I'd paid Â£75 for it, I'd be happy, but for Â£25 (even cheaper in the US) it's an absolute no-brainer.

People moan about the bypass (I've never had any troubles) and the switch (again, no trouble - but for Â£25, buy a spare if you must!), but I reckon these are amongst the best pedals money can buy.

If I was slightly more flush, I'd offer a Victor Kiam-style money back guarantee. But I'm skint, so instead, you can piss and moan at me to your heart's content if you don't like it.

And remember, for true octave fuckery roll off the tone control, play 9th fret and above, and use the neck pickup.

The trick w/ fuzz, according to me: Don't expect to keep or be in love with your first fuzz box. Also, don't expect that once you sell/trade this 1st box you won't end up owning multiple versions of the same circuit again in the future. Fuzz is a sickness. Try a Fuzz Face, a Big Muff and something weird. One of each, then trade up and keep focusing in on what you like about each pedal and how it interacts w/ your shit.

I have a French Toast and I honestly don't know why I'd ever need another fuzz. it can do so much with it's few simple controls. I listen to demos of other fuzzes and i dunno, maybe I'm just not a fuzz nut but, it all just sounds like sounds I could easily get with the french toast. add an EQ pedal to your chain and truly I can not think of a sound that you can't get.

LOVE my IC Muff. Mine is a '77 or '78, don't remember which. Used a nice Carling DPDT to change it to true bypass (I don't usually care about stuff like this, but in this case, even with the pedal bypassed there was pretty crazy bleed through of the fuzz'd signal). I think these are one of the best deals in "vintage" gear at the moment. Examples from the late '70s can still be had for ~$100 on eBay. Add a $15 switch and a few minutes of your time and ba-ding!
