A pedal question, sort of

After years of tuning by ear I had to face the fact that my hearing ain't what it used to be and I got a Boss pedal tuner. It's the white one I've seen others using. When I first got it the display would show the note by letter, but some how it got goofed up and shows the string number now. I fucked with it a little bit to try to get it back and I can't figure the stupid thing out. Any one know what i'm talking about and how to get the display back?
thanks in advance,
erik

Press the Mode button until it goes back to note name?

I would assume you press mode until it's back on chromatic.

That did the trick.
Thanks

i fuck hate those because of the fucking "modes". IT'S BULLSHIT.
string number is not musical information.

Yeah. just recently my boss tuner started doing that shit everytime I plugged it in, and I'd have to switch it to the "note" mode, which rocks.

I borrowed one of those Boss tuners once, and the fucking thing was off by a few semi-tones. I can tune much better by ear than those shit things.

Aw fuck. Yeah, wrong term, sorry. Meant cents. it was within a fret but didn't ring properly when plucked with the other strings.

I'd imagine that's down to guitar setup- too high an action or too deep a concave with throw a fretted note sharp compared to an open strings. Guitars are never 100% in tune anyways.

Yep, that's likely the cause, but my point was that if I would rely solely on the tuner to tell me my strings were "in tune" it would not be. I ended up having to adjust it by ear in the end anyway, so I see little point in a tuner. I'd prefer a small pedal size headphone amp with a mute switch to tune on-stage than a tuner pedal.

Whatever floats your boat, chief- the point is being in tune to a reference that everyone else in the band is, ie A440. It's all well and good having your guitar intune with itself, but if you're slightly out with the other guys, it's gonna sound shite.
With a properly set up guitar and tuner pedal, you'll be laffin', trust me.

There's nothing wrong with the set up of my guitar as it, when properly tuned, is completely in tune with itself at all frets. The bass tunes to me and that's it. A tuner still had enough variance that I could hear that it was off. My only point was that those Boss tuners, least the three that I've borrowed, had enough variance to them to make me not trust them.

every now and then i accidentally tap a button on the strobe-o-stomp and have to correct it by simply unplugging the damn thing. i can't be arsed to figure out all the things this pedal does, so i never have. it's just a way accurate tuner, better than anything else i've ever used.
