amp kits??

i got an email today from this place about amp kits, build-your-own-at-a-fraction-of-the-price kind of thing. i've never seen them before. worth a look or utter wanksville?

Not sure about overseas shipping, but I think it would still work out cheaper. Plus, they show how complex the kit is right there on the page. bubbles_horowitz just built the Weber 5E3 deluxe kit not long ago - his thread should be down the page somewhere.

The Weber kits at least are a very good deal; they're about 1/2 to 1/3 of what the real thing costs. Most of the other kits I've seen end up costing more then just buying a used version of the real deal, plus you have to build it yourself.

I've built a couple of amps. The first one was a jcm800 clone without a kit. I just made a list of all the parts I needed found HERE and ordered them from different sources. It was a smooth easy build using quality parts.
The second one was a blackface twin reverb clone from weber amps. The twin was way more difficult and I ran into a few problems durring the build, but got it working in the end. The weber kits are not that expensive, but for a reason. I felt a lot of the parts were sub-par and ended up replacing them in the end.
I noticed the kits on the link you had were from MOJO and you can order from them direct. I've purchased a few odds and end parts from them and are good, but not cheap.
Certiatone are less expensive, but their shipping rates are murder.
I'm getting ready to build another jcm800 for a friend and will do it on my own with no kits again. I have a lot of the components I need since I ordered in bulk the first time and only need to put money into the big ticket items like the trannys.

I more or less built a Metroamp kit of a '67 spec 1959 superlead marshall, but sourced a lot of components myself to save money. Used the Metroamp instructions once I had everything, so it was like building the kit. It's over a grand to buy the kit, I believe... I ended up spending about 800 after getting the sweet white tolex'd headcase and chassis.
May still seem like a lot for a kit, but I wanted that amp at the end of the day. In the US the official Marshall 1959slp re-issue is like, 3 grand. They added an effects loop, oh wow, where's my spankerchief. PCB, robots crankin 'em out for pennies between cyber-smoke breaks. I got a '73 superbass in 2002 for $1500.

It's gonna be about another month before my buddy gets the rest of the cash together so I can start start. I would front it, but my girls birthday just set me back a bunch of dough.
HERE is a link to an old thread from when I finished my first one. From what I remember the only real confusing thing was wiring the input jacks and modifying the Fender chassis. I have since mounted it in the 2x12 Twin Reverb cabinet I used for the SHORTSCALE GUITAR WANKERY video. The one thing I don't like is it has no reverb, but I just found a schematic and layout to add an fx loop to it and will probably do that in a week or two.
