What do you use for vocals?

When you jam with your band what do you plug the mics into?
How powerful of speakers do I need if the vocals need to be able to be heard over drums guitar & bass (in a punk band)
how much would it cost me to get a cheap setup, that could do those 2 things?
I won't have a very large budget, I don't really care for that good of quality at the moment, I will slowly upgrade later on.

(second post after thinking for a bit...)
Ebay the mixer and a couple of good PA Cabnets (Peavey will do)
and snatch some PG58's or similar from ebay as well...
I would buy cables and stands new, but thats just me...

Fuck PGs, imo, I don't mean to chime in as rude, but they're like a Epiphone to a Gibson...
A few SM 58s or even SM 57s (they're not bad on vox, tbh)
If you want, you can get the Beta series, which are the SM mics on steroids.
I agree with the rest, though, Peavy = awesome for PAs and what not. And behringer is shite, but it'll get the job done if you're on a budget.
I should add, the main reason people like the SM 58 is that it'll take a beating, though it's not the best handheald dynamic out there, you can scream into and drop it and kick it and it'll be fine.

Dude i totally agree..i was just mentioning PGs becasue they are uber cheap,...but yes...
If you can, definetly get yourself SM58s or 57s, even to start on....
Edit: A not e on peavey...if you can, get it instead of Behringer. A lot of this depends on your willingness to buy used....

edit : NVM about the PG's, I know what they are lol
why 3 mics?
my band is only 2 singers, and in a small room we wont have to mic up the drums?

Shure makes various series of microphones ranging from cheap to expensive.
PGs are their lower end.
SMs are what many people will consider 'the standard.' (Mike hates that term)
Betas are teh awsomez
I enjoy quit a bit of dif. mics, such as my Peavy i2 ($30) and lots of shit from Sennheiser...
There's 3 rules of micing, though:
1) No rules, only guidelines
The other 'rules' are more geared towards recording, but I can quote that shit, too, if you want.
But yea, Wilbur probly knows more than me.

With the way I sing, by far the best sounding setup is to unplug my microphone.

okay, thanks alot man, now I gotta save up for some decend 80+ wat amp (guitar), a decent 100+ watt bass amp, 2 mics, 1 speaker? a mixing board, 2 stands, and find a way that i can buy all this and still afford to buy a sexy mustang....on 8.50$ an hour
damn...Maybe the bank will give me a loan or something lol

Instrumentals.
jk
The band I'm in ("my band" sounds unnatural) has 2 vocal majors - they can be heard unamplified over drums, Steinway full-size grand, Guitar, and bass. It's really fucking impressive. I think we have an old Peavey mixer and 2 EV 1x15 2-way cabs for performance.

DSB has some shit, haha
Ultraviolence: You just gotta make priorities. I like to record and make rap music more than play the guitar, so I got Logic Studio, a AT 3035, a Mackie VLZ Pro, and of course my iMac... Then I started ordering parts for the guitars and what not.
If you play guitar and sing, then just worry about those two things, leave the bass necessities to your bassist. Or if you're the bassist leave the guitar stuff to your guitarist.
but if you do it all, then rob people. More specifically, rob Guitar Center.

True that....
I would say, not including the amp situation (?) that you need...
A powered mixer:

Something similar if not this one...4 channels would leave room for upgrade
At Least One PA ca (see second post):
Avoid the little 10's. 12 minimum.
2 used mics.(on par with 58/835)
Cables & stands (Surf on monoprice for the speaker cable as well...they have great stuff for CHEEP)

If you buy anything from guitar center, you can probly haggle them into giving you cables and even stands for free.

Your not kidding. Snag your mixer or cab & mics from them and ask for XLR cables and a couple of mic stands to with...If you buy the PA mains from there, they better give you stands for them, or something is up...

I'm the guitar player / singer, my brother (bassist/singer) who (when he was working/ had student loans) spent fuck loads of money on me, and I feel like I owe him fuckloads, so I'm gonna buy him his bass amp. I also don't really have much to spend my money on, I'm not going to school, I'm 17 (i live with parents, no bills to pay), and I'm usually at home writing songs / playing guitar so I don't socialize with enough people to spend it on friends, and I don't do enough drugs to wanna waste my money on them...
we also don't have guitar centers in Montreal

For cheap combos, these are the top of the heap....
Avoid Behringer for Bass at all costs...
