Or are they a bit shit and naff sounding...... I can't decide, I think they are naff but I still kind of want one.... an extreme one that does crazy shit....but I bet it'll date in my brain straight away.......
So what do you all reckon on them and their usage

phasers rule! i'm not fan of "crazy shiet" sound, i like more subtle effects.
guitarist of Incubus uses phasers pretty often, that's kind of sound i like.
if you play clean/crunchy - go get one. just don't put control dials on max!

I used to have 4 when I had a pedalboard. I still use my Small Stone on occasion. I really like them for slow movement and, in my mind, they do a better slow leslie sound then so called "leslie simulators".

I prefer flangers to phasers, but I like them both just fine.

Effects I dislike: Phasers, Flangers, Loopers, Delay.

Really? You dislike delay? If it wasn't for delay and fuzz, I don't think I'd even play the guitar...

i actually played a phase 90 at gutar center and it kept me in my seat for a good half hour, adds a lot to the clean tones, but i don't like them with heavy dirt, it just sounds iffy
edit: listen to Incubus, Blood on the Ground
awesome phase tones

In honesty, delay used well can sound gorgeous, but so many poxy bands overuse the effect to create 'atmosphere' or 'depth' it's become quite the bugbear for me.

I really like my Small Stone, the up position with distortion does some cool sounds

hey, except fuzz and delay there's also music.. don't forget that
on topic: if used *after* some mild distortion or overdrive, phaser on fast modulation setting can add some dynamics, and it sounds pretty nice.

I had a Univox phaser that I sold to Pac here. Put that thing after a BMP and it was amazing - like being inside a jet engine.

Come to think of it, you make sense. I still like them, but you make sense.

+1 but I will admit I'm a big fan of deerhunter who do specifically what you're saying.

I think phasers are pretty lame most of the time.

I've used a Moog 12 Stage Phaser and it was pretty cool, very expensive though. With effects like these its all about proper use and not oversaturating your sound. It can be pretty easy to crap on a good song by overdoing it.

I have a Phase 90 and used it on the slowest setting and nearly fastest setting, didn't like the typical "that's a phaser" tones. I haven't used it in ages but occasionally use the flanger on my polychorus, or very slowly sweep a wah with my foot independently of what I'm doing on the guitar (so it has a sort of automatic sounding slow cycle).
