Filling bored out tuner holes?

Post by Will »

4 of the tuner holes on my U1 were bored out when it was made into a bass. You can sort of see it on the 2 E strings (also the D & G):

What's the best way to fill? The proper way would be dowels and redrilling, but I don't have a flush-cut saw or drill press. I'm wondering if I could just use QuikWood or something to fill in the excess and sort of mold a new hole for the bushing. Would it work or would I just be making a mess?

that is a tough one.
i would say that since you are doing this yourself then perhaps wood filler with a bit of paint would be the best option.
otherwise, dowell rods.

I used drumsticks as you can't get maple dowel rod here, but I had use of a drill press.

Guitar Fetish makes conversion bushings, but I don't know if you have had too much wood drilled out.

Do not use Kiwk wood or any of that filler putty, it's total shit, and will shrink.

I think there are conversion bushings in there now. It was drilled for bass pegs, so the holes are pretty big. Hmmmm... My grandpappy has a drill press and skills. Maybe I should wait until I'm home for Christmas and do it the right way.

Thanks guys!
