wanted one for ages, since i first heard losing my religion i guess.

Tanglewood teardrop shape, i kinda wanted an f-style cos they look brilliant, but preferred the sound of this one and it was a whole load cheaper too.
was marked at 300, got it with a hardcase, 2 packs of strings and some picks for 350, which is less than it would have cost online. it pays to ask for bargains.

Solid mahogany top, solid mahogany back and sides too(which i wasn't expecting for the price), it's a lot of instrument for the money i reckon, there's a little bit of rough finishing in places, but after a setup and a full tuning it sounds grrrrrreat. Has a piezo with one volume and tone, sounds pretty decent plugged in.

mandolins are tuned GDAE, like an upside down guitar, so it's easy enough to figure out basic chords. people are getting pissed off with me walking around the house playing and singing galway girl. haha.

I love my mandolin. It's a cheapo deal but it's solid wood. I'd love a decent (and electric) one someday.

Haha, yeah it'll do that! It takes a bit of getting used to indeed. That's why I prefer banjo to mandolin, doesn't wreck your fingertips as much. That and I have big hands. Mandolins are a bit too small Plus I just love the banjo. Great instrument. Ok, I'll stop talking

yeah, the scale is doing me in. i played viola for years and really miss that extra 2 inches in the scale length. i keep reaching too far to hit the notes.

I really like the mandolin. My brother moved to New Zealnad there and left his here. I haven't taken full advantage of this yet though.

Well you should. Mandolin is a quality instrument, and it's great when you get a reallly really good player.

I also imagine that it'd make my writing for the violin/viola a bit better.

Every few months I'll pick it up and play it for a few days, for several hours a day. I think that I sort of get fascinated and really enthusiastic about it, but then lose interest ('lose interest' is probably the wrong phrase to use. It's probably truer to say that the cravings I get for the instrument sort of fade after a few days, and I never really get capable enough on it to be able to play it with ease).

Yeah I get that. Going through phases. I find it especially happens with types of music I want to play or listen to at different times.

Although with the banjo I wanted to learn to play and stuck to it. One of the rare occasions that I actually do that!

I've already pratcised hard at piano and guitar. I've spent years spending hours a day on these instruments, and I'm fairly capable on either one. Starting again on another instrument will take a lot of practise for me, because I'll approach it the way I know how: with lots of classically informed practising. This probably means that I'll have to leave it a few years until there's less going on in my life, because at the minute I really can't fit it in. This is also the case for the flute, the erhu, and the violin (all instumets i plan on being able to play).

Fuckit though, I'm, only young, so I've plenty of time to learn these things.

I also really enjoy being completely hopeless on an instrument like the mandolin. I've spent years conditioning my hands so that they mever get sore, and so that all the right muscles are well developed and so they're quick and supple. I play the mandolin for half an hour and my hands cramp like they haven't in years, which is sort of nice.
