I have that GFS trem. it is amazing. it instantly added more volume and sustain to the guitar. I would say just get the trem and some GFS pickups and you have an amazing sounding guitar for less than $200.

Careful, the pickguard might not be a direct replacement.
Big block trems, I'll probably get one for my Strat project. I never realised how skinny the block was on it

I don't have that guitar but I have the same neck on my Tele, the neck is nice but a little bit chunky. Also I would change out the pots and throw some decent ones in there.

Can anyone
really notice a difference in pot brands?

I don't know how much "jigging" you plan on doing, but that pickguard won't fit. To get real nitpicky, the bullet strat's pickguard follows more of the 8-hole, single ply 50's spec, whereas any mint guard for strats would be a 3-ply 11-hole 60's spec (the 50's strats' pickguards didn't age, just their knobs and pickup covers).
I realise how dangerously close that was to a "period correct" comment, not intended. You may actually have to shave pickguard off the neck pocket/bridge route, that's what I had to do putting higher-quality pickguards on a couple of old Squier Bullet Series (mid 90's Affinity equivalent) strats.
Variability on these cheaper squiers is a huge issue. The two most similar guitars to this in the Squier line, the 90's Chinese Bullet Series strats and the later 90's/current Affinity Series strats, I have much experience changing the guards on, and it's never gone the same way twice. In fact, I just noticed Robroe's bullet (when it was stock) was different to the one in the official Squier pic, and had an 11-hole 60's style guard with a beveled edge in single ply like a squier affinity/bullet series 8-hole guard. Weird. Probably did him some favours on compatibility, though it's rare you'll never have to rearrange a couple screw holes when putting non-specific strat guards on a squier.

See I'm using an Affinity Strat for my current project and have ordered a 8 hole guard off Terrapin. I fully expect it not to fit properly but I've stripped the paint so I don't mind drilling new holes.
