hi im new on here and i wanted to get someone's opinion on this for christmas im getting either a fender classic player jaguar or a fender classic player jazzmaster any suggestions on which one?

i think that's a decision only you can make. try them both out and see which one you like better.

I think the main deciding factor should be the feel. Jags are 24" scale length, whereas Jazzmasters are 25.5". If you like the feel of Strats and Teles, you'd probably feel more at home with a Jazz. Jags have a slinkier, more Gibson-esque feel to them due to the shorter scale length.

Both sound somewhat similar in my opinion. Jags are a bit more twangy, Jazzes are a bit more mellow.

tldr: Try both before you decide.

Also I notice that you live in Pittsburgh -- where I'm currently in college. If you need a good store to check out guitars at, try Pittsburgh Guitars on East Carson Street in the southside, or Pianos 'N Stuff in Fox Chapel. Both stores have friendly employees that can help you out. I actually got my own Jazzmaster from Pittsburgh Guitars.

although, keep in mind that a jag feels nothing like any gibson i've ever played. gibsons tend to have a babseball bat feel to their necks (in my opinion), but jags seem to fit like a glove. both a jag and a jazz would be a beautiful, versatile choice, and i'd even consider an hh jag if i were you. . . at least play one and see how you like the tones.

How many jaguars have you played?

Mine feels nothing like a gibson, gibson's fuck up my hand and I get cramp all over the place, the jaguar feels like the missing piece of the puzzle when I pick it up.

How many jaguars have you played?

I owned a Jaguar HH, and have played several AVRIs and CIJs. Admittedly, the Jag HH was more in line with a Gibson due to the tune-o-matic and flatter radius -- but the CPs are similar in these regards.

I'd say they are closer to the feel of a Gibson than your typical Fender. Still got their own thing going on though.

I think my jazzblaster feels closer to a gibson than my jaguar, but that's not a fender neck.

Anyway Mr Lebowski, I'd go for a jaguar personally, but get yourself to a guitar shop and play them both. Especially if you've not played a shortscale before, it might not be to your taste.

sorry, man, that's just not been my experience at all. i owned a "gibson scale" toronado for a while, and even that neck felt completely different to ANY gibson i have picked up. and i can't think of any aspect of my hh jag that feels at all like a gibson. the tom bridge means dick to the playability of the neck.

well i have played shortscales and was thinking of buying one of those and i owned a les paul for a while and really wanted to get rid of it so i guess the jaguar would be the best choice thanks.

i liked the neck but hated the humbucker sound...

I was never arguing the point that they feel exactly like a Gibson, I said they feel more Gibson-esque than a typical 25.5" Fender. The HH and CP Jags also have a flatter radius than typical Jaguars. Thus, to me, they feel more like a Gibson. If you are referring to the size of the necks, plenty of Gibsons and Epiphones I have played had slimmer profiles than the "baseball bat" size you are referring to.

yeah i get you there i like the feel of gibsons just dont like body, stylings, set up, price etc. but i always liked the necks thanks for the reference though

both guitars are great--- just pick the one you want the most
you have to be leaning towards one more than the other
playing them would also be great--- but you can't go wrong either way
both are quality sticks

yeah i did i picked the jaguar just all around better im gonna have to buy a cij though there equally as good though

I hate the black jags. the classic player MIM ones are good, as are the AVRI....but I would also suggest you to take a look at mustangs. I chose it over a few jags.
