CIJ Pickups

I like the tone of the single coil pickups on my new CIJ Jaguar but I am getting a moderate amount microphonics. I don't get a good drop of of sound between single notes like I would expect. I get a ringing/sustaining as I play, more like a humbucker than single coils. These pickups are pretty hot and I've tried turing down volume/gain, treble and dropping in the pickups lower. I wanted to consult with the experts before I go any further. Is this common for CIJ SC pickups? Does waxing or other insultating help? Thanks.

If hey're hot enough for you get your local tech to wax 'em up for you. Should only cost £5-£10.

Remove the claws. stopped my microphonic feedbacks.

It's a shame to lose the claws as they look so distinctive, but it does seem they are to blame for a lot of the CIJ squealing.

My MIM pickups only squeal if I'm using a lot of gain and facing the amp, and not playing. So I either roll off the volume knob or tilt the guitar at 90 degrees to the amp. When I'm facing away from my amp as I would do in a live situation they are quiet as mices.

fuck some quiet guitars. squealing guitars ftw

haha, it's not the most musical squeal, even for noise rock - otherwise why would Hurb have wanted to fix it?

i'm more hardcore

tbh just less refined i wouldn't know the difference between musical squeals and non musical squeals

It's all about pitch. Microphonics are high pitched and hurt your ears.

Make any sound you want really high pitched and it becomes nasty in a not good way.

Didn't Fran have a how-to-pot on the wiki?

Yeah, potting does work to a degree. You need to submerge the whole pickup with its claw and cover into liquid wax, to fill any cavities. I melted down 7 plain white household candles.

This is the page i used.

Yeah, the nasty microphone style feedback which cuts me to the bone. Not as cool as bass feedback on turntables. That stuff blossoms in an awesome way.

Thanks for the suggestions. I wondered if the claws could be contributing to this but aren't they supposed to cancel hum? That seems like the easiest thing to try first. They don't do much for me on looks anyway. I guess if that doesn't work, I might go for the waxing. I saw an article on how to do that on the wiki site. Thanks.

Nah they're supposed to "focus the magnetic field". They generally vibrate tiny amounts causing the microphonic squeals.

They were meant to increase sustain by changing the shape of the pickups magnetic field.
