my patience for one of these seems to have paid off- a guy emailed me saying he had one for sale that he was about to put on ebay, and would i like first pop at it? made him an offer, and i'm just waiting on it turning up in the post...

there isn't a huge amount of info on these (timhulio would possibly know more than me, i'd wager) but from the info HERE it looks to be a 60s 5/168 series strato deluxe. it's a jag type copy, some of which had a string mute, and others had an 'organ' effect, which seems to be some sort of weird switch that cuts the attack from the signal. i don't think the one i've bought has the mute, and i won't know until i get it if it has the organ effect. i'm sure it's completely useless anyway, even if it does.

here's some pictures he gave me for now. yes, it's a bit ugly and weird, but that's the sort of thing i like...
edit: forgot to say, they were made in germany, hence the thread title...

yeah, it's in a weird place but i hook my leads through the strap anyway, so might actually be ok...

I was gonna say- those Marshall style knobs don't look original. Could be wrong though.

i hope so, but they probably aren't chrome, i think they're nickel plated or something! no idea about the knobs, looking at the ones on the framus site i'd think not, but there seems to be a dozen variations on a theme, and i can't find a picture of that exact model, so your guess is as good as mine.

yeah i didn't mean it in a negative kinda way, i do that too so having the jack so high i think is actually a pretty good idea

next step = install a jack in a pickup / wire 1/4" cord directly to pickup.

i've just been informed this thing's been delivered to my house. expect a full report later...

i took the whole thing apart last night when i got home, cleaned everything up, the metal just had some greasy stuff on it that wiped off, now it shines like new. the switches were gummed up with crap, cleaned them with some meths and now they're crackle-free. the neck pocket gives me the fear a little bit, it's totally bizarre, but quite clever in its own way... i'll post all the pics i took of the guts etc later on when i have time.

i'm taking it to rehearsal tonight for a proper test, but even at bedroom volume i must say i was really impressed by the sound. very jag-like, but thanks to the 3 pickups and seperate volumes and tone knobs the range is pretty huge. i'm pleased so far.
