which is better overall.... I can get the MIM alot easier but am not thrilled about the color choices... I have to work a little harder to find a MIJ but it would end up cheaper for by a bit (and although they have better color options, I would be limited to what I could find)

Need to clarify, I will not buy online or via mail unless it is coming from someone I can trust, so ebay, etc are out.

I would say it depends what you're after.

I would say if you're a trem user, that the CIJ is the way forward because of it's rocking bridge and the Trem being further back, so the Trem Arm is in a more comfortable position for use. Also the CIJs have smaller frets which you may like.

The MIM has better pickups (they're a lot more powerful and less microphonic than the CIJs, I lowered mine from the stock settings and have zero microphony at high volume levels with the band and while facing my amp), the TOM bridge also is more stable for tuning if you're an energetic rhythm player, and I love the neck and medium-jumbo frets on the fretboard.

So basically they're pretty similar and it goes down to what you're after - I think the MIM is a great rhythm guitarists' guitar. I'm nominally the lead player in SellCrazy but I'm predominantly rhythm and I love this guitar. The CIJs are great also though, and there is a lot more colour choice out there in the used CIJ market - they can be hard to find new these days since the MIMs though.

Thanks Mike,

I don't use trem much and I prefer medium frets, not smaller frets.

Sounds like MIM is the way to go. I just wish they made some better colors...

Didn't like the jap Jag too much when I played it. The sound was not so great it made. Haven't tried the classic player series though.
