Space between tail/bridge.

I am currently working on a project that has a tune-o-matic bridge (ABR-1), and and string-thru body.

I am trying to decide on how to space the string holes and the bridge.

What effects do different spacings have? I assume any issues with different spacings would be tension related? I would like to go with a spacing of about 3 to 4 inches based on appearance alone; is there any reason why this is a bad idea?

With a TOM, pay attention to whether the strings would rub on the back of the bridge, were it too close to the tailpiece (holes, whatever). This can tilt the bridge forward, and fuck with things in a few other ways as well.

In general, more length after the bridge results in less string tension, a slinkier feel to bends, and a softer sort of attack with perhaps a bit less sustain. Though it's more related to the string angle than the length, that's generally true because of the nature of things... A generallized difference can be heard by playing a Mustang and Jag back to back, not that it isn't more complicated than that.
