I cannot for the life of me get this bugger to work. Any ideas what the mystery transistor could be- I've tried a bunch of stuff in every possible orientation and no sound at all. Bloody sucks!

depends on the transistor. You have to make sure the Collector/Emitter/Base pins all line up for that perfboard layout. You may need to cut the traces and splice wire to make whatever transistors you're using line up right.

check the pinout on your jfet. i always have bad luck and get jfets with abnormal pinouts.

also if you did that vero board layout, make sure you cut the traces where the red box with the dot are shown.

J201 is wrong. Check the pin out. Gate is not the centre pin.

Ah brilliant, thanks Mike. Jfets are a mystery to me!

It sounds waspy. Lol.

I bent the legs and got the one up there to work, but this is probably a better way of doing things:
