I love black pickguards. Just got one for my RI mustang bass. I like the Dee Dee Ramone look it gives the bass.

Seriously though, sounds delicious. Like a more mid-rangey P-bass. I've never played an OG mustnag bass, so I don't know how it compares. I'm glad the stock pickup is a keeper, because I don't think there are any commercial replacements available.

Everytime I take the pickguard off mine to work on it (which has been a fair bit recently) I consider if I should actually just buy a black pickguard. Could this possibly be the OG finish? Just because they painted Strats that way, I doubt they ever painted a MM, unless it was for practice or for an employee or relative.

I've always liked the idea of a white mustang with black guard, although I think black pickups covers would look better.

I got it from Jeanie Pickguards via Ebay. $25.95 plus shipping. The black pickguard on the Mustang guitar is actually a Fender Japan 69 RI guard, from GPR.
