Effects loop.

I am sure that this is common knowledge, and has been covered to death already on the board, so I apologise in advance. I used search, but couldn't find what I was looking for.
So, the FX loop goes after the Pre and before the Power amp, right?
From what I understand, you put drive based effects in the input, and modulation/delay FX in the loop, right?
well, i tried putting my dist+ in the loop for the first time today, my setup looks like this right now:
MMaker>Mike's Mammoth (fuzz)> Input, then Dunlop Tremolo> Distortion+ in the loop.
sounds alot different, I was running D+>Mammoth>input, Tremolo in loop, but its like the mammoth just doesnt sound right if its not "first." this i believe is considered the most conventional way, overdrive into fuzz or distortion (D+ is basically OD), so the OD boosts the Dist.
then i tried Mammoth>D+, which was interesting. the mammoth sounded better this way, but both on was a really weird filthy nasty sound. kind of cool, but not what i was going for.
in the loop, the D+ is much cleaner on its own, which maybe because it isn't "pushing the front end," as they say... right? but it still boosts the highs and provides some gain like it normally does. it also doesnt get all overblown by the mammoth being behind it, although technically it still is.
anyway, i guess i just wanna talk about this, see if others have similar experiences or whatnot.

ok so.
if i remembe correctly i used to have a marshal gacd30 amp, it had a loop,
i hated it,
then i got a peavey bandit 112 or something, it had a loop, i hated it.
soon after i got an ampeg sc-70 2X10 combo amp, once again, effects loop, i HAET IT, but love the amp
then i got my cyber twin, effects loop, i hate it....
then i got my 68 fender bassman, no effects loop and i love it.
i usually use 6-10 pedals at a time, and effects loops just kill everything, just do it old skool.

thats interesting. i just started to mess around with it, ive never had one before this amp and so have been going straight in even on this one until now. this is the first time ive had cause, but as i said, its the only way i can use the mammoth and the plus at the same time and still have the mammoth right next to the guitar.

I've messed around with the one on my AVT, but have never really been convinced by it. I suppose it's because I usually put everything at the front, so to me the sound of a chorus pedal going into the front of an amp is what a chorus pedal is supposed to sound like. In the effects loop, it doesn't sound the way I want.
Also, it's a wile lot of hassle.

The main difference is whether you want your effects before or after the EQ. If you like your distortion after EQ, more power to you.

I think Duo nailed.
basically, do it if you want to. If you don't want to, then don't do it.

Or before/after preamp distortion if you're running the amp dirty. My amp is pretty much always set clean, can't be arsed with FX loops.
However, a booster pedal in the FX loop will work even better as a totally clean boost than straight into the amp. That way, you're not slapping the preamp into clipping, resulting in MEGA VOLUME BOOSTZ.

The best thing about all this stuff is that there are no rules, only guidelines and the way that old guys did it. So if it sounds good to you, then it is good.

Yes indeedy- great and FRESH sounds have been achieved by doing things "wrong".

yeah, it maybe wrong, but it sounds good and im doing it thisway for now. i guess i just wanted to start a conversation about it and see if anyone had any other experiences to share. thanks guys!

like mike said, its all about the sound, and no one has the same setup(in the grand scheme)
im 100% positive that there is no one in the entire world that has the same setup, but it took a while to get a good sound, or something pleasing to my ears( as surgical and messed up as they)
fx loops work for some folks but there are some that it does not.
i like to tweak my amp to a good clean sound, the build my delay/ chorus pedals, then my distortion pedals, and the noise pedals in between, those are not as time comsuming (depending on the song)

today i tried turning both dist+ knobs all the way down, all mammoth knobs all the way up, and turning the D+ output up until it is comfortable. this sounded pretty fucking good, kind of like having a master volume control for the fuzzbox. the preamp i guess was pushed extremely hard, as the mammoth has incredible gain (its about as loud as clean at 9:00, and just gets loud as fuck all the way to 5:00.)
is this dangerous/damaging for my amp to do?
