I've recorded a demo in Kristal. What should I save it as,

wav.
aiff.
flac.
ogg.

What's best for uploading and stuff?

I'd take ogg or flac. None of them are really standard though, apart from wav but that'll be HUGE.

Decent quality mp3 is perfectly fine.

Sooo, what am I doing here. Save it as wav and then what? Just upload it through our uploader and post a link?

I've no idea. When you mean demo do you mean gear demo or song demo or what?

The uploader limit is 10 meg anyway so you're gonna need a smaller file than a wav will give you.

the raw audio files SHOULD be .wav

.flac is high quality and large size
.ogg is kinda like mp3 and would be my choice

if your just doing an audio demo and it's short, just post a raw .wav

i would suggest mp3 though just for compatibility. I usually encode CBR at 192 for internet clips.

save stuff as .wav , then convert to .mp3 for uploading. You can convert stuff to mp3 in iTunes if you have it.

+1, that's how I always do it. It's best to have a wav (or some hi-quality version) saved somewhere, if even just on an external drive.

yeah, wav then mp3. oggvorbis is nice but many can't hear it without codecs and shiz.

As someone mentioned above, ogg and flac are ideal, but they still aren't really mainstream yet. Your best bet is .wav

there's no question that all your audio should be saved as a lossless, uncompressed format - either wav or aif depending on your system. think of these as "master tapes" that you want to have archived.

after that, flac is lossless but reduces the filesize by approximately half. that means that you will not lose audio quality but the other side of the problem is that most people don't know what to do with a flac. the obvious choice for sharing is mp3 format, which is lossy (audible difference in sound quality) but is the most easily distributable file format. you can safely keep backups in flac format but it is generally not recognized by audio editing programs without having added a codec or plugin, so it will not be as convenient as a standard wav or aif file.

so the answer is that you need to create two files in general. it is inconvenient to share a wav file with a lot of people but you'll regret it if you only have a 128kbps mp3 of a recording you made.
