good luck finding one of those. i saw a red sparkle one (not sure of the exact model- the franz ferdinand one) a year or two back for £700, but i just didn't have the money.
i love my hagstrom II, it's a fantastic guitar. i've posted it a few times, but it doesn't hurt to look at it...

Awesome! How do you like the trem on that guitar?I think Harmony used to put those on some of their better quality guitars. What do the pickups sound like?Like a stratty single coil or more like a P-90?What do all the switches do?

ive had two vikings. they are neat guitars but the much-touted "king's neck" is way too tiny, imo.
ive always wanted a 12 string "II" however.

I got some. Not really keen on the Roxy Music model or the batman though. Apparently you can't refret the plexiglass fretboard. The Swedes are too much like generic Les Paul copies and leave me cold. Had a Scandi for a while, but could not get on with it at all. Shame as it looked great.
Couple Hagstrom IIIs
Hag II project and synthy rebuild
Lilac Hagstrom I
Couple Vikings

Shit Tim, it just occurred to me that you have as many hagstroms as I have guitars, acoustics included.

No shit, huh?
If you ever get to busy for that hagstrom II project Tim I know someone who'd be willing to do take it from ya, heh.

No but seriously, this was my first and will probably be my last. IMO it's the most beautiful guitar I've owned but I hate the pickups (although the do respond to fuzz beautifully).

Nick I actually like the Viking pickups a whole lot. But they're likely in the wrong guitar! If there was a center block I'm sure the Viking would be infinately more usable. Like that Red Viking is a really great sounding and playing guitar, but it's virtually untameable, feedback-wise.
That Hagstrom II is gonna be nice when it's done, but I've been waiting on a new scratchplate for a while- first one got lost in the post. Fuckers. It's going to have some Viking pickups in it, actually. And schaller-ripoff Gotoh tuners cos I fancied a change.

Akshully. It might not be sacrelige to get the Viking pickups rewound more like a coronado, or get some replacements. Less hot, fatter/flatter windings. You should look out for dead Viking pups.

Here is our Hagstrom II.
The pickups are a little bit meh but that Kings Necks is easily one of my favourite necks of all time.
Note: Yes the guitars match, no we don't wear outfits on stage.

What makes you think the pickups are meh? I've always liked these (as you can tell).

I find the bridge pickup is definitely a bit lacking in fullness and the neck, in volume.
To be fair, this problem seems to have become more apparent after having addressed a serious grounding issue, so I might have fucked something up but there was always a certain "gnarliness" about the bridge that I couldn't bring myself to fully appreciate. Again, this may be something that is isolated to this particular guitar (I've never player another) and it could have something to do with our amps and effects. All things told, the guitar definitely has it's applications in what we do and and could hardly be replaced by any of our other gear.

trem's ok, but i tend not to use them that much in general. it could maybe do with tightening up, but i don't really know that much about them to be honest!

in that case, sell your viking to me!

i bought it from hurb along with his duo-sonic before i joined shortscale. i think he got it from mr mustache who posts here sometimes.
as far as pickups go, i haven't really got that much to go on, but they're hotter than mustang single coils, a bit crunchier... maybe
slightly more like P90s but still recognisably singles. they sound good to me. the switches are on/off type things with a sort of mid-cut and a master on/off.
timhulio is the hagstrom master though, he knows more about them than i ever will!

I dunno Tim, my problem with them is mainly that they're too snappy, with not enough sustain. The sustain problem is most likely like you said about the full hollow body in connection with the pickups, but I'm still not fond of the attack.
I have a 3 day weekend ahead of me, I'm probably going to take it apart, take some detailed pictures and throw it up in the classifieds or ebay. Been meaning to for a long time, I don't really like playing it that much anymore but I still can't stop looking at it.
