I've modded it since and will be demoing the modded version after I'm done modding it to completion. Need to drill case for some togglies next week.

At some point I might edit up an A/B of the various settings between Stock and Modded.

It doesnt sound that bad with the distortion most of the way down, and the tone most of the way down. Im not defending it, Im just saying.
I couldnt listen to it when the tone was at noon, and I like treble.

Blugh. I've never listened to a DS-1 really and it wasn't as awful as some people make out, definately not for me though. Can't wait to hear modded version.

I played with mine a bit ago for the lulz. Even after mods, it was brash and nasty. If I hadn't known better, I would have thought it was an octave fuzz or something.

yea, it's pretty trashy sounding rhythm wise. that's not so bad I guess if you wanted to sound like that. :/ I think the only thing the DS-1 actually does well is for lead work with humbuckers. it does that DOOEEEOOO kinda thing really well.

Has anyone ever actually used it to blast the fuck out of their T00RBZ yet?

I never got around to it.

Yeah, this is through a tube amp. And I used it with my Marshall at rehearsal. It's too bright and sounds pretty nasty

My DS-1 was horrible, I'm glad it's gone.

What mods are you planning on doing? I have one of these and I'll likely follow this with lots of interest.

Its got one of those tone controls that seems to control a way harsh range- rather than reigning it back, then bringing it up for the slight cut you want, you end up with a kinda muffled tone with a spiky bit on top. My ChunkyCheese is the same.

I'm done and really happy with the results. Just need to make another demo now, but this is what I did:

- A bunch of cap swaps to increase the bass response and reduce the treble
- switched the symmetrical 1n4148 clipping for Asymmetrical clipping using LEDs
- Reduced the gain of the first transistor stage and changed the frequency response to clip less shrill highs
- Removed the scoop from the tone stack
- Made the tone control usable across it's range
- Smoothed the clipping section

Here's some pictures of the mod process:

Sounds a lot better in person too actually, maybe something a little off with the mic position or youtube compression or something, but I'm rocking it with the Jaguar now and I can't quite believe it.

I'd love a list of the mod you did sometime incase I run across a dirt cheap DS-1, I want it to sound like yours. :D
