I really like the look of danelectro and silvertone guitars and I've been thinking about getting one recently, but i don't know how those lipstick pickups sound on heavy distortion because I can't find any videos on youtube or anything of it and I heard somewhere that they don't handle it well. If anyone could demo it I would greatly appreciate it, thanks in advance.

my silvertone w/lipsticks sounds awesome distorted. its vintage though, and IMO it sounds alot better than the 90s dano reissue i had before. im also a better player than i was then, and have a better amp, so its hard to say. still, i was impressed by the pickups in my silvertone and meh about the pickups in my RI at the time.

ive never understood people that say "they dont handle distortion well" about certain pickups. i think lower output pickups sound awesome with distortion/fuzz, i have to assume those people are going for a much different sound than i am.

Those people should say "they handle distortion differently". I'd say distortion coming out of a PAF in the bridge or a lipstick in the neck both sound great, just not for the same reason.

alrighty thanks a bunch, I needed that! I'm deffently saving up for one now, I was thinking about an old U1 or one of those "amp-in-case" models i hear so much about.

the AIC ones are the best deal going, i think. basically the same guitar, if you can find a 2 pickup, as they are the same scale/ electronics as a U2 or 2pu DC, except they sound a bit boomier and "looser" (ambiguous, i know, but it's the best i can do) due to not having any support beneath the pickups. a hollow body if you will, as opposed to a semihollow. this, IMO makes them unique and awesome. plenty of twang still to be had from the bridge if wanted.

i got mine for about 200, if memory serves.


btw, mine didnt come with the case/amp. wish it did, but the better deals are the looseys.

Lipsticks sound very good, and very unique, with fuzz, BMPs, etc. They won't push an amp, though - I think that's the problem most people have with them.

Just keep in mind that the vintage and most recent RI lipsticks sound much brighter then the 90s Korean reissues. They also have a naturally scooped response, so you'll find yrself bumping up the midrange quite a bit.

Heres my take on Lipstickz, they work great with distortion imo...

I don't know which one I like better, so I think I'll just get whichever one is cheeper and with better quality when I get the $$, which will probably be an AIC.

if you get a multi pickup one youll find that since they are wired parallel, the more pickups at a time you use, the harder they will push. like having an internal boost.

I was considering it. I use distortion so rarely, though. It's really just with the band where I'm using a Mustang or 335 anyway. I bid on a fixer-upper '57 U-2 last week, but it went too high. I'm limited cause I refuse to buy one that isn't black.

some great videos in this thread. hurb, that is the greatest blues solo evar. and love the authentic noise solo in fran's.

I was trying to recreate this sound with a Boss HM-2 and the 'solo' is a Bass DD-6 on 'Warp' mode.

didn't Tom Verlaine also stick lipsticks in a bunch of his Fenders.

Blues guys have been doing that for ages.
