Pikups wiringz halp

Just got a Gibson 496 of a friend of mine, and I'm looking to drop it in my project Squier 51...problem is im not sure how. There is only one wire coming out of the pickup...

classic gibson pickups had one wire only the other are Ground.

yea, the shielding is the ground. just unbraid a bit of it and then twist it together.

So twist the shielding and the braid together, solder the red to the main Gibson wire, and solder the green & white together right?
Edit: Nevermind, instead of patching to the old wire ill go strait to the pots....so the braid is ground and the center is red..i think i got it...
Or maybe not?

yea, going to the pots is a good idea. the ground usually goes to the casing of the volume pot but I don't know enough about squier 51s to tell you much more though. they usually have some kind of coil tap right? you won't be able to do that with this pickup. but you can probably wire it neck/neck+humby/humby in some way.

wired it up half a dozen times in a couple of different ways, nothing but buzz and hum...have to take it to the shop
