I love the bridge coil on my Hagstrom. Really, I do. It sounds great. BUUUUUUUUUUUUUT, the motherfucker hums more than a hooker on Kingshighway giving head.


Anyone have any experience with "hum canceling" single coils?

The 6k option would seem to be snappy and quiet package. The TDPRI crowd seem to have written well about them, too.

Before I order I'm going to measure what I already have in the bridge of my Hagstrom. I love the sound of that pup and don't wanna change that.

While you're at it, is there a chance some shielding-n-grounding might rescue that pickup? Copper tape (or whatever) in pickup cavity, underside of pickguard, or even around/under the pickup itself.... connected by wire to a pot cover or other grounded component....

One thing I can definitely not recommend are the Fender Vintage Noiseless stacked single coils. I have a Strat that came with them that I loathe first and foremost for being a Strat, and second for having those terrible pickups.

I second the copper shielding tape no matter what. Perhaps even try that before swapping the pickup if you really like the sound that much.

Mouser has some in several different widths.

My american deluxe w/"noiseless" pups made zero hum. My coronado hums, but I have to position myself differently in the room away from my amp and it goes away. So stand on one leg, lean back, and see if that fixes it.

I should have been a bit more clear -- they are absolutely silent, but not very single-coil sounding at all (to my ears).

What style pickup have you got in your Hagstrom? What guitar is it? Maybe shielding is the answer (and give the switches a good clean too).

The switches are fine. It's just the stock pickups in it, I haven't ever changed them because they sound good.

I can try shielding, but they go silent if I switch to a "middle+bridge" position. Unfortunately I love the bridge by itself and it hums like crazy.

I am waiting for my next paycheck to do this.

Oh, completely misread this. Hungover and all.

It's the....F300? Basic Strat-style three single coils.

Middle + bridge makes everything go dead? If so, check all the wiring first. Compare what you see to standard Stratocaster wiring. It looks like the F300 is laid out to work identically. If the wiring or components are shorting out, maybe they're causing that hum too.

You might compare the DC resistance of the middle pickup to that of the bridge and neck pickups. Usually the bridge is a higher-impedance pickup, but there's a chance that the middle and bridge are identical. If that's so, and if the bridge pickup itself and not the wiring/switch is truly the cause of the problem, you might drop your middle pickup into the bridge position (and rewire) to get the same bridge sound. Then decide what to do about a replacement pickup in the middle position.

Standard Strat wiring:

No, no. There is nothing wrong with the wiring, switch, or anything like that. They are single coil pups that pick up 60 cycle hum, like they all normally do. When I put the switch in any position that adds in the middle pup, being reverse wound, the hum goes away because it's behaving like a parallel wired humbucker.

The guitar is fine, the wiring is fine. I'm just sick of the hum. My Jag has a JB Jr in the bridge and I got used to hum being gone I guess.

Ah right kool. Sorry I thought you had a vintage one. In that case all those s/c sized ones will fit fine. I can't really suggest anything except try a few different ones until something hits the spot. Most decent brands have good resale on ebay.
