The Baja Telecaster is a whole lot of guitar with similar looks to that one. They're very underpriced (although maybe not now if you have to pay Fender's new pricing).

It has a better bridge than that one also.

the bajas do look really cool, but i can't seem to find one in the shops around here to play it. i also prefer a solid color, rather than the slight transparency showing the wood underneath. looking at it again, the picture i posted does have the grain, so maybe that isn't the american ash i'm referring to, or perhaps the american ash isn't solid as i thought i'd remembered seeing.

anywhere to buy the baja's online apart from the bay?

You could get a MIM classic 50s telecaster and buy a '52 style black pickguard for it. I think their finishes are a little less translucent, and they should be similarly priced or slightly cheaper than the Baja.
Check a Baja out if you see one in a shop though, they really are nice.

I'm sure you can buy them online new. What country are you in?

If you played before you bought you could get a very opaque Baja - they vary. It's your only hope if you are finicky about it not being very transparent. The American '52 RI (which also costs a grand more) is considerably more transparent than the Blonde Baja finish.

I've done a lot of searching for a Blonde Baja Telecaster over the last few weeks or so. All but one of the online retailers I tried (about eight) are out of stock however, one or two did have the Desert Sand colour in stock. The best price I found was £399 however, I've now noticed the prices going up to £429/439 upwards. For those retailers that are out of stock they have said they should have them in by April - May although one did say days but I'm not sure that I believe them. I have found quite a few online retailers who detail having them as in stock on their websites only to find out when you speak to them that their website wasn't up to date or maybe they were deliberately misleading.

I'd rather have this...

Classic tele vibe, shortscale and $90!

Good build quality too judging by the shortscale bass I played around with by them. And at that price you can afford to jazz it up however you want and still come out cheaper than the fender version.
