For how I play guitar I swear by locking tuners. I wanted them on my Mustang project but somehow Sperzals would never look quite as okay as they do on my strat. A little research turned up Gotoh Vintage style locking tuners! A review here: http://audiozone.dk/index-filer/gotoh.htm

Anyone here tried them?

Never found anything wrong with Klusons or kluson-types.

Mayhap you're right but this is relevant to anyone who owns a vintage style fender neck no? Perhaps mentioning my project is extra-curricula to need in this post. Yes ... full stops and not-mentionings-of things, that IS the way forward.

Nah not selling 'em I just hoping that someone here might be able to tell me if they're a bag of shite or not before I spunk good money on some.

Locking tuners are a complete waste of time.

Fair enough fella it really depends on what you do with a guitar. 16 years of using both locking and non-locking tuners tells me otherwise insofar as a trem is involved and I'm the one wanging it. If no trem, or you don't abuse the trem much, you're quite right they're pointless.

I can honestly say i dont admire them and they are nowhere near as efficient as a locking nut but i get the concept behind the idea. Unfortunately the nut and string trees are more likely to cause tuning problems than the multiple windings on a machine head.
I have two guitars that came with them already fitted.

Abuse it. A lot. Mainly to make sort of ungodly noises - not really divebombs or any of that kind of stuff but pretty vigorous stuff nonetheless. So you use the trem? that's it? if you are going out of tune with trem usage then your guitar is setup wrong.

have you ever seen hurb play?
ungodly noises and heavy trem are his bread and butter.

i use the trem alot and never have problems staying in tune. locking tuners seem like an addition that's not gonna do much to a well set-up guitar.

The jazzmaster/jaguar trem, when setup correctly is a wonderful design that does not need to be fucked with. if you are going out of tune then something is wrong with your setup.

I've never had a guitar with them, but I've never had a problem that might be solved by them. The most stable guitar I own (apart from a locking-nut eqipped LTD with a Floyd Rose) is my Squier Jagmaster, with a vintage trem. With a properly cut nut, and the trem set up properly, the thing will not go out of tune. I have held that guitar by the trem bar and violently thrown it around and it doesn't go even slightly out of tune. I suspect that locking tuners aren't necessary proveded you know how to wrap a string around the capstan properly.

He's on about the Mustang trem though. Its notorious for going out, especially set in a floating position. When you look at its design its a miracle it ever returns to point zero, for this reason i dont think locking machine heads will achieve anything.

I'll agree with Hurb there, my Jag is the most stable guitar as far as tuning goes. I've had more problems with some Floyd Roses.

Apologies for harping on about the jaguar jazzmaster, same applies for mustangs though. they are not my favourite compared to the jazzmaster trem. but you shouldnt have tuning problems just the same.

I think it makes sense to try other solutions to the problem before spending money on locking tuners. I've never felt that they would help particularly, and as fran says there are other variables that are worth looking at before the tuners. Have you finished this build yet? If I were you, I'd spend a while tweaking things and see how you get on with it. By a while I mean six months, alowing you to try different gauges of strings and that sort of thing.

When the mustang trem was new to me I had problems, but it just took time figuring it out. but you can make it work with tweaking the setup.
