Do any of you guys know of any way to get the vocal effect Patton gets here without using some crazy mic'd gas mask setup?

I don't know how HE does it but I do it by siging into an earphone from an old walkman going into a cheap analog delay box with the mix way dry and the gain way up.

its a flat mic that is supposed to be placed on things like tables or walls to pick up room vibrations.

Whoa.. 200 for a prebuilt, or 10 bucks in parts for something that I want to sound shitty anyway. I think I'll build one....

Now the question is how do I package it so it looks good on stage... clearly the gas mask approach has been done already...

fucking genius! homo-erotic... but genius!

I think Japanther does something similar but they use the existing microphone in telephone recievers.

tape a contact mic onto the side of your bassist's face.
Scream directly at your bassist's face.

I don't think Brian would appreciate that much... funny though.

Wonder what it would sound like if I just taped it to my throat.

It would sound awesome.
everybody could hear you swallowing your own spit and the little silent noises you're always making but are too faint for anyone to hear.

I think KKNull did something where he swallowed a contact mic and based an entire album on the recordings... Maybe that was Aube... I forget.

Yeah I have doubts as to wether that happened or not, really.
Sounds like something Aube would do, though.

Wait a second... how was the mic transmitting? wireless? If not what was teh other end connected too... how does that work!?!?!

I doubt that actually happened. I was just playing on the artist Aube's affinity for recording bodily sounds with contact mics.

A boundary microphone is also a PZM mic (pressure zone microphone), so that might help your search results. You can even take a PZM and stick the diaphram to like a big piece of sheet metal effectively turning it into a huge fucking microphone. kinda like when Frank Zappa laid his speaker cabinet on the ground so that it coupled better and made the whole floor resonate with the cab.
