Making some pickups Robroes want your feedback

Post by matocaster »

hello all! I'm gunna wind some Robroes (Mustang style singles) and I wanted some feedback from all of you. I'm thinking of doing a short run of a few sets.

I would like to know what you all think about the perfect mustang style single.

I have not decided if I will use alnico 2,3, or 5 magnets, will most likely use 42 gauge copper winding, vulcanized fiber bobbens and wax potting.

I'll post a thread of the build of these, and get a sound clip up too.

So let me have it, what suggestions do you all have? Stock or over wound?

Fuck, I'm way too excited, I need to go to bed for real, before I embarrass myself anymore.

Gav's on fire as of late. I moved this into the Gear section.

I may sound weird on this, but what about Alnico 2 and underwound? Weak pups and let the amp do some work. Just an idea.

thanks for moving this, my bad, don't know what I was thinking. under wound 2's would be pretty neat

lately ive been all about "weak" pickups. not sure what the rating on lipsticks, but they are the best sounding imo, and they must be really underpowered by modern standards.

the single in my melody maker sounded weak after playing my SG's humbuckers for a while, but now that ive been playing just the silvertone and melody maker for a few months, im convinced that hotness is overrated.

im going to go with slightly underwound as well. maybe alnico 2 in the neck and V in the bridge.

other way around I would say. V is a bit bright for the already bright bridge.

Lipsticks are underpowered by modern standards, but they're actually the loudest I have right now.

I'd go with an Alnico III overwind - that way you get some of the aged magnet thing happening, but not losing too much crispness. The overwind would bring out more of the midrange character the mustang has and keep the bridge from being too brittle.

thats another way of looking at it i guess. suppose i want my bright bridge to sound really bright, and my mellow neck to sound really mellow.

i was thinking this earlier playing. the sound was so full and loud and thick, i was thinking "how could it really get fuller or louder or warmer and thicker than this?"

sort of an epiphany for me, don't think im going to fuck around with modern type shit again.

perhaps the neck should be underwound and the bridge more like normal wound. as you said, nothing worse than the ol brittle bridge pickup.

The frustration with my mustang right now is that I hear this really nice smooth midrange when I play it acoustically, but the PUPs don't seem to hear any of it. At least I can't get it from the guitar to the speaker no matter what I do.

They're just the stock MIJ Alnico Vs at 5.55K - I should really upgrade at some point.
